CHESAPEAKE

Nate and Tiffany had broken up, but he gave her an iPod last Tuesday.

And this, Tiffany told the police, is how he picked it out for her:

The couple shopped at Sears in Greenbrier Mall two weeks ago and browsed the electronics counter. Nate also noticed a Heroes at Home display nearby, with two big plastic jugs filled with money for needy military families.

Here is what a security camera captured around 9:45 p.m. June 22:

A man in a T-shirt grabbed the Heroes at Home jugs and stashed them in the shadows. He detoured into the tool department, where he stuffed his pockets and chose a screwdriver.

He walked toward the electronics section, with his T-shirt pulled over his head and his cell phone held out, aimed at himself.

Security cameras recorded the man recording himself.

Next, he jumped the glass barrier around the electronics counter. He grabbed nine iPods. He hopped back and retrieved the two jugs of charity donations. His arms full, he left through an emergency door.

The next day, Nate gave Tiffany an iPod. He bragged about how he got it. He sent a video to her cell phone.

Last week, authorities seized iPod cases, wires and two big blue plastic jugs filled with $18.49 in change from a friend's garage on the 400 block of N. Centerville Turnpike.

A Sears employee estimated the charity funds totaled $400 when they were stolen.

Police charged Nathaniel Forester, 20, on Wednesday with grand larceny and entering a building to commit a felony.

Tiffany erased the video from her cell phone.
