Every morning, the Editorial Board of The Virginian-Pilot convenes for a give-and-take session on the day’s news. The conclusions drawn from these discussions seed the editorials for the next day. These discussions sometimes get contentious, thanks to the spectrum of political attitudes held by members of the editorial board. It is not unlike Hampton Roads, ranging from conservative to liberal. But the board is rooted in the center, and that’s the position from which the editorial board tries to cast its opinions.
Most of The Pilot's editorials address matters of local and statewide interest. Each of the editorial writers is responsible for both a locality and several topics. But every day is different and the writers must be able to research, report and write several hundred words in three or four hours on just about any subject.
