CAPE CHARLES

The mayor of Exmore, a 29-year veteran of the Norfolk Fire Department, died Wednesday afternoon in a crash on the Eastern Shore.

Jeter Guy Lawson, 49, was traveling south on U.S. 13 when he ran a red light and struck a Toyota Tundra that was traveling east on Route 184, said Sgt. Michelle Cotten of the Virginia State Police.

James Weiner, the Toyota driver; Ralph Orzo, a passenger in the Toyota; and Lawson were all flown to Sentara Norfolk General Hospital for treatment. Lawson died of his injuries at 5:44 p.m., Cotten said.

Weiner and Orzo, both of Cape Charles, were being treated for injuries that were not considered life-threatening.

Lawson was not wearing his seat belt during the crash, Cotten said. Alcohol was not a factor.

Norfolk Battalion Chief Harry Worley said Lawson will be greatly missed.
