Sometimes, things just come together.
This last Thursday was the day of the big Kenny Chesney concert. We took our good friend out fishing like we usually do when Kenny comes to town...Kenny Chesney's fiddle player, Nick Hoffman.
Nick loves to fish, so we hopped aboard the Ocean
Pearl, captained by my buddy, Captain Steve Wray. Since we were limited on time, we headed to Cape Henry for some Spanish mackerel. On the way, a boat flagged us down. They were hooked up with a big cobia, and didn't have anything to help land it.
I knew their best bet was to send Captain Skip Feller over with a gaff. Never LOAN your gaff for a cobia. We dropped Skip off, handed him the gaff, and backed off and watched the tired angler fight the fish on a spinner combo and a flounder rig.
Skip expertly gaffed the fish, and swung him aboard their boat in one swing. They were very grateful. Nick had never seen a live cobia, so he thought it was great! We learned the fish weighed in at 73-pounds!
We headed on to the Cape, where Nick caught over a dozen nice Spanish. He had a
blast. On the way in, we stopped by a local restaurant, where they cooked the Spanish for us. I thought the waitress was going to faint when she found out who Nick was.
We met up with Nick later at the Kenny Chesney concert, where we were given VIP passes. We stood backstage to watch the show, as we do each year. A very cool day all around. Congrats on the big Cobia!
Get out on the water, and enjoy the Outdoors!
