A former customs supervisor from Norfolk will spend two years on probation after he admitted stealing an airline passenger’s laptop at Philadelphia International Airport, according to the U.S. Attorney’s Office for Virginia’s Eastern District.
John Joseph Rendzia Jr., 42, also must pay a $500 fine and restitution to the victim, according to a news release from the U.S. attorney’s office. He pleaded guilty in U.S. District Court on Friday to embezzlement and conversion of an airline passenger’s laptop. Judge James E. Bradberry sentenced him.
According to the news release:
Rendzia was working as a U.S. Customs and Border Protection supervisor in Philadelphia on March 19, 2008, when a family left a laptop in the customs area. It was missing when they went back to look for it, and they reported it stolen to airport police.
A customs officer later found the laptop and gave it to Rendzia, who kept it and brought it to Norfolk when he was transferred in August.
Rendzia was accused of converting the laptop for his own use, but a system on the computer allowed government investigators to trace it to him.
He resigned from federal service as part of a plea agreement.
