Highly ranked defensive end commits to Tech

Posted to: College Football Sports

Virginia Tech's first of two rising senior camps this summer has already paid major dividends, as the Hokies received an oral commitment Saturday from Brookville defensive end Zack McCray.

The Lynchburg native is rated the No. 9 weak-side defensive end and No. 95 overall prospect in the nation by Rivals.com. He is the cousin and former teammate of Logan Thomas, who was rated the nation's No. 1 tight end when he signed with Tech in February.

McCray is 6-foot-5 and 235 pounds and recorded 20 sacks as a junior. He chose Tech over a lengthy list of scholarship offers, including Alabama, Florida State, LSU, Nebraska and UCLA.

McCray marks the second four-star prospect from the Class of 2010 to pick the Hokies, joining Nick Acree, Rivals' No. 14 defensive tackle. Acree committed to Tech last year and remains a Hokies pledge despite offers from Florida, Michigan, Ohio State, Penn State and UCLA.

Tech has received four commitments from defensive linemen in this class. McCray is the ninth overall prospect to choose the Hokies and the sixth from the state of Virginia.
