Huckabee, Gingrich urge political engagement in Va. Beach

Posted to: News Politics Religion Virginia Beach

VIRGINIA BEACH

Two leading voices of the Republican Party's evangelical wing visited Rock Church on Friday for a forum aimed at recapturing some of the movement's political momentum.

Former Speaker of the House Newt Gingrich and former presidential candidate Mike Huckabee urged Christians to get involved in politics to preserve the presence of religion in American life.

"I think this is one of the most critical moments in American history," Gingrich said. "We are living in a period where we are surrounded by paganism."

They and other speakers warned about the continuing availability of abortion, the spread of gay rights, and attempts to remove religion from American public life and school history books.

Gingrich and Huckabee, a former governor of Arkansas, argued the rights of Americans stem from God and to ignore that connection is perilous. The two were among several speakers, including former U.S. Senate candidate Oliver North, at the three-hour "Rediscovering God in America" event. The event was closed to reporters but was broadcast live on God.TV, an evangelical Web site.

Huckabee told the audience he was disturbed to hear President Barack Obama say during his speech in Cairo, Egypt, on Thursday that one nation shouldn't be exalted over another.

"The notion that we are just one of many among equals is nonsense," Huckabee said. The United States is a "blessed" nation, he said, calling American revolutionaries' defeat of the British empire "a miracle from God's hand."

The same kind of miracle, he said, led California voters to approve Proposition 8, which overturned a state law legalizing same-sex marriages.

Voters "did it because some things are right and some things are wrong and they had to make a stand," said Huckabee, who enjoyed some early grassroots support in Hampton Roads during his unsuccessful run for the GOP nomination last year. He may run again in 2012.

Gingrich, now a consultant and author, said the ties to religion in American government date to the Declaration of Independence, when Thomas Jefferson wrote that men are endowed by God with certain inalienable rights.

"I am not a citizen of the world," said Gingrich, who was first elected to the U.S. House from Georgia in 1978 and served as speaker from 1995 to 1999. "I am a citizen of the United States because only in the United States does citizenship start with our creator."

Huckabee urged his listeners to get engaged in public life or their views won't matter.

"Politicians aren't interested in pleasing the public," he said. "They're interested in pleasing voters."

"America was founded on Christian (biblical) principals"

What Christian principles?

We often see the empty claim but not the actual 'principles'.

The God Hang-up

I want to go on record for those that don’t know that Christianity is not an all inclusive religion that will have everyone to just hold hands and get along. Jesus said “I am THE way, THE truth, and THE life: no man cometh unto the Father, BUT BY ME.” America is not the same as the other nations because we have a different God.

America was founded on Christian (biblical) principals regardless of what the history revisionists would have you believe. Sadly we have drifted far away from what our founding fathers intended our Republic to be.

Government is not the answer, the only way to turn the tide in our society is if (2Ch 7:14) If my people, which are called by my name, shall humble themselves, and pray, and seek my face, and turn from their wicked ways; then will I hear from heaven, and will forgive their sin, and will heal their land.

The mess that we are in is to be laid squarely at the feet of those that call themselves Christians. We can only expect the Lost to do what they are doing.

awww

darn, it cut off my quotes... i must have hit the 750 character limit, i think Benjamin Franklin was the last one i had in there... there might have been another i cant remember, regardless all you have to do is search up the names of the founding fathers and you will get plenty of quotes for them all... Sadly it cut off the B Franklins who was the closest to Christian as any of them i found... he said that Christian principles were the best but he doubts Jesus's divinity. so there you go...

For what it's worth... If the facts matter

John Langdon
Signer of the Constitution
In the name of God, Amen. I, John Langdon, . . . considering the uncertainty of life and that it is appointed unto all men once to die [Hebrews 9:27], do make, ordain and publish this my last will and testament in manner following, that is to say-First: I commend my soul to the infinite mercies of God in Christ Jesus, the beloved Son of the Father, who died and rose again that He might be the Lord of the dead and of the living . . . professing to believe and hope in the joyful Scripture doctrine of a resurrection to eternal life . . .

4 of the 39 signers, had you heard of them before that site?

I had never even heard of most those people. I read up on John Langdon, I saw no mention of his religion in any of his speeches, the only mention I saw was from his last will and testament. You have shown some evidence that 19 men (4 of them signers of the Constitution) were practicing Christians, but did they want to create a country based on that? I could quote Obamas Christianity plenty but he also said "…we do not consider ourselves a Christian nation or a Jewish nation or a Muslim nation.” It is reminiscent of the 1797 Treaty of Tripoli article 11 “As the Government of the United States of America is not, in any sense, founded on the Christian religion;” that was read, accepted, approved, and ratified by the senate.

Dag Nabbit! the founding fathers must have been revisionists!!

-are you saying there is more than one God?!??!

let us examine some of these founding fathers...

Thomas Jefferson
"I have examined all the known superstitions of the Word, and I do not find in our particular superstition of Christianity one redeeming feature. They are all alike, founded on fables and mythology."

Thomas Paine
"Accustom a people to believe that priests and clergy can forgive sins ... and you will have sins in abundance. I would not dare to dishonor my Creator's name by [attaching] it to this filthy book [the Bible]."

George Washington
"Let us with caution indulge the supposition, that morality can be maintained without religions."

John Adams
"God is an essence that we know nothing of. Until this awful blasphemy is got rid of, there never will be any liberal science in the world."

James Madison
"An alliance or coalition between Government and religion cannot be too carefully guarded against......Every new and successful example therefore of a PERFECT SEPARATION between ecclesiastical and civil matters is of importance........religion and government will exist in greater purity, without (rather) than with the aid of government. "

Virginia Renewal Project’s Pastors’ Policy Briefing: Rediscover

I want to offer an apology to Bill Bartel. I had posted a previous comment that the meeting he referred to was not at Rock Church, Virginia Beach but was at the Sheraton Waterside in Norfolk. I had said that he needed to get his fact straight on where it was held because I was there and it was at Sheraton not Rock Church and that I knew that because I was there. I stand corrected on the matter. He was correct and I was correct also. There were two different meetings with the same speakers on the same dates. Both meetings did not allow the media in so I was there at the one at Sheraton and he watched a live broadcast of the one at Rock Church on Godtv. Please accept my apology.

a miracle? how very democratic

I like how he said:

"The same kind of miracle, he said, led California voters to approve Proposition 8, which overturned a state law legalizing same-sex marriages."

does that mean that the people of California did not want Prop8 passed and God used his magic to make it happen? What about all these other states to legalize marriage... did God use up all his fairy dust on California? And what will he say when the inevitable happens and it is overturned in California, however many years that takes..

Bigotry

It seems to me that Newt here, aside from practicing some religious bigotry is also confusing paganism or pagan belief systems with LIBERALISM.

I happen to be pagan and VERY conservative.

This is not the way to build a coalition among conservatives. Conservatism does not require Christianity, neither does being a citizen of the United States.

I invite you to retract the idiocy and redefine your crusade against what you believe is harming this country Newt, because it's not religious beliefs, it's LIBERALISM.

All this time I thought you Newt, of all people, had a clue. This country is not about religion only, it's about individual freedom and personal responsibility. These things require a level of morality, but morality is not exclusive to YOUR religion or ANY religion.

I am disappointed in you, and quite pissed off actually. How bigoted.

Whose God Is That?

Hukabee and Gingrich bring up the Christian God everytime they want to divert attention away from the from real issues-ie-an immoral, illegal war in Iraq, a trillion dollar defense budget,a collapsing American economy, illegal wire-tapping, and the suspension of the "Constitution".
They need to get a life...Whose God Is That Now???

what exactly is your version of tolerance?

Seems everyone has their own definition of tolerance..... Those who don't believe in God are more often totally intolerant of the Christian faith and denounce our beliefs and words as hate speech. Yes, God does command us to love our brother but that does not mean we place veils over our eyes and act oblivious and allow ideas and actions that are against our Christian beliefs directly into our lives. It also does not command us to remain silent on these issues that are against our beliefs. We too have a right to free speech and will continue to use it.
God also asks us to discern between what is right and what is wrong.
If you believe that because Christians disagree with other lifestyles and beliefs makes us intolerant perhaps you should review how other religions react and regard these same "alternative" lifestyles. Maybe you should research the Shari law and see how those with "alternative" lifestyles are treated.
The rally cry for Christians to vote faith first when it comes to politics would quickly absolve the parties and special interest influence. Seems to me it is a win win situation.

"I am a citizen of the

"I am a citizen of the United States because only in the United States does citizenship start with our creator."

Newt, you are a citizen of the United States because you were born and raised in the United States. Period! Now if you feel you are surrounded by paganism, then that's your problem. I don't feel that way so don't try to speak for me or anyone else. We're really too smart for all this hell and damnation fearmongering gibberish.

I'm Amazed

It would stand to reason, at least in my small mind" that if this nation were so founded in God and rightousness that we wouldn't have some of the problems we have. First giving acknowledgement to the Grand Architect of the Universe, the Master of all, the Maker of every good and prefect thing...I wonder how it is that we as people have become so intolerant of each other. Now it seems extremely popular for the GOP to move it's politics to the pulpits, and the Dems lambaste that move...all in the name of GOD. It takes a very brave soul to hide behind the armor of God all the while being intolerant of ALL human beings no matter thier beliefs or political preferences....1 John 5:20 If someone says, "I love God," and hates his brother, he is a liar; for he who does not love his brother whom he has seen, how can he love God whom he has not seen?....Break down the barriers and accept all that walk the earth...no matter their preference, skin color, or religous beliefs.

Jack

Do some exegetical studies please. That verse that you took does not mean everyone on the earth. In that time, when it occured, and still today a christian's brothers and sisters are those that are in Christ, in other words, other Christians.

So

You would have me believe that we pick and choose when and to whom a particular verse applies to. I am speaking of those that lable themselves christians. If we truly loved our brothers and sisters we would be more tolerant of them...all of them, not just those that think like you; period. If you choose to love only those that believe as you do that's your choice. Vote how you belive and live as you want...I'll fight and die for your right to do just that. One Love my friend...One Love

I'm not picking what I want it to mean

You are. Do the study, learn the ancient language and the history and culture of the time and find out what it truly means. Christians are told in the Bible to love each other, separate themselves from the world (i.e. worldly thoughts and practices) and to spread the gospel so that those that are in the worldy thoughts can become brothers and sisters. Do your research and learn.

jack

brpster is correct in his own way of thinking. As practiced by today's 'Christians', the Bible is optional and he can interpret and ignore the passages as he wants to.

If you don't believe me check for yourself

First off that verse is not 1 John 5:20, it is 1 John 4:20. Now, instead of taking that verse out of context, go all the way back up to the beginning of the section on loving one another which begins in 1 John 3:11 and continues on through 1 John 5:20.

excuse the typo at the end

It should say 1 John 4:20 not 1 John 5:20

You once again show

the intolerant side of the current world view Keith. I do not interpret the Bible anyway I want. I study it, I check the original language texts, I study the culture and history of the period the book was written in to understand what the Bible says.
Funny how the so called "tolerant of everyone" leftists mean tolerant of everyone but anyone that disagrees with them or is a Christian.
