A federal bankruptcy judge has given Michael Vick until the end of the summer to resolve his bankruptcy case and again warned Vick's lawyers that the revised plan must be viable.
U.S. Bankruptcy Judge Frank J. Santoro, who in the spring rejected Vick's original reorganization plan, stressed at a hearing Tuesday that the last plan "left something to be desired."
Vick refused to comment publicly before and after the hearing. The media circus that had been following him since his release from prison dwindled to just one national reporter and the local media.
Vick owes roughly $25 million, including around $7 million to the Atlanta Falcons, where he was the team's star quarterback. The Newport News native remains on house arrest at his Hampton home while he completes a 23-month sentence for bankrolling a dogfighting operation.
Paul Campsen, one of Vick's bankruptcy lawyers, told Santoro that a revised plan would be filed by July 2. Santoro then set an Aug. 27 date for a hearing on whether to approve the plan.
"Judge, we're committed to getting this plan done," Campsen said in court.
Santoro rejected the earlier plan in part because it was based on Vick's potential return to the NFL and a lucrative salary, something that still remains out of reach. NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell has said he won't consider lifting Vick's suspension until his legal matters have been resolved. Vick comes off house arrest on July 20 and is likely to apply for reinstatement after that.
Another sticking point in the last plan was that Vick did not have enough money to pay his professionals, including his lawyers and accountants, in order to emerge from bankruptcy.
Campsen told the judge that the professionals have agreed to waive around $3 million in fees if Vick does not obtain lucrative employment, presumably meaning a position on an NFL team. Vick is currently earning $10 an hour at a construction job.
"The lawyers and the professionals are taking a risk that he makes money," Campsen said. "If he doesn't make money, the professionals don't get paid."
If the revised plan fails, Santoro said he will be forced to appoint a trustee to liquidate Vick's holdings.
After the bankruptcy hearing on the fourth floor of the U.S. District Courthouse, Vick went down to the second floor to check in with his probation officer. He was escorted by Lawrence H. Woodward Jr., an attorney who represented Vick through the criminal proceeding.
"Mike met with his probation officer. He's in compliance. He's doing everything he's supposed to do," Woodward said. "He's happy to be home."

When are we going to get a
When are we going to get a report on how he's doing on the job. Guess he hasn't decked anyone yet, or stomped on their leg as he did in the NFL, or there would have been coverage. I'd like to know if he is showing up every scheduled work day, on time, does he have a work ethic, how is the quality of his work, you know, all the stuff those who hold his future in their hands should be looking at as well. They say they'll be assessing his remorse and rehabilitation, and all of the above is relevant to that.
I'm starting to agree
I'm involved in the animal welfare community (No, I don't work for PeTA, I actually HELP the animals AND the shelters that cared for them-you know, REAL work!) and I'm starting to agree that this is getting a little beyond the realm of reason.
Vick can work his menial construction job and is welcome to live in peace, but reporting every nut and bolt of the bankruptcy is the same as saying "WE HAVE NO NEWS TO REPORT TODAY"
I don't think he deserves another chance in the NFL in light of what he did or how contrite he pretends to be-I personally think the man is a narcissist with delusions of grandeur and will be even more problematic than ever, but the Pilot is taking Vick's 15 minutes of fame into triple overtime-enough already.
Wrong...Vick is a Disgrace!!! and Sick!!!
If anyone thinks Vick is not a disgrace then they need to visit Websters... Give us a break...animal torture is cruel... Vick is sick!!!
It
seems this judge has an axe to grind with Vick. Anyone else and their "bankruptcy plan" would have been approved.
Please stick to the facts.
Hey, Va. Pilot, let me clue you in on why people are angry with you. Your tag line said "disgraced" star. News flash guys, thats only your opinion. That belongs on the Op-ed page. Your correct tag line should have only contained facts and said convicted, or punished ex-football player, etc.
When are you going to realize there is a difference in your leftist opinions and actual facts of a story?
I agree with jmt
If it was any other person the bankruptcy would be over. This judge wants his 15 minutes of fame. Wish I could vote him out because it makes no sense to me why it's taking so long. He obvious he dislike Mike punishing him within his guidelines of the law.
Delaying Vicks Bankruptcy
If you ask me this judge is looking for his 15 minutes of fame. Michael Vick could file Chapter 7 keep one house and a car and tell his bill collectors to go to hell, instead he is trying to pay them. What a jurk for a judge.
Hey, what you all expect
Hey, what you all expect from the Virginian Pilot? Selling papers and subscriptions are down, so they are going to milk everything they can.
The TV media is killing the print media!!
Besides, who really cares what any of the Vick's are doing at this present time?
I am more concerned about the cost of everything going higher and higher and my savings is being drained to eat and drive my car.
really....nuff about vick
I agree. This guy has been kicked in th eyou know what enough already over dogs. I luv dogs just as much as the next guy, but i wouldn't trade a 1000 animals of any kind for one human. Vick is now just a run of the mill financially troubled guy story. Other than falling off the proverbial mountain story, this one has run it's course.
Let's get on the scent of our troubled and misguided socialist government. Obummer's honeymoon is ver. let's start calling his administrations plans/intewntions what it is....Change We Don't Want! Lower taxes, leave free enterprise alone, and quit tqeaking our rights as free citizens. Get out of our life government!!!!
