PETA doesn't want you to wear fur - unless it comes from them

I received an e-mail string from PETA in which the organization had reached out to France's first lady, Carla Bruni-Sarkozy.

PETA claimed it had seen photos of the former supermodel wearing real fur. Based on her concern for wildlife and the environment, the animal-rights organization asked her to renounce fur as fashion and to donate her coats to PETA to give to the homeless as the likes of Mariah Carey, Kim Cattrall and Mary Tyler Moore have done.

The PETA correspondence said it receives thousands of fur coats from people whose feelings about wearing real fur have changed. Because the animals can't be brought back, PETA sends the coats to homeless shelters and refugee camps, uses them in educational displays and gives them to wildlife rehabilitators to use as bedding for orphaned animals.

Run that by me again: Homeless people and people in refugee camps are walking around wearing celebrities' real fur coats?

The notion is perplexing.

It would seem that if it's reprehensible to wear animal fur, it would be reprehensible to wear it no matter what your social standing.

And what about safety? If a person can get jacked over a pair of sneakers, jewelry, a wallet or a purse, it's plausible that a fur coat would make a refugee a sitting duck.

Dan Mathews, vice president of Norfolk-based PETA, said in an e-mail that homeless people are the only ones with an excuse to wear fur. Most recently, the coats have been given to the homeless in New York and Washington, D.C., and to Nigerian refugees, he said.

"People donating their coats to PETA get a tax credit for the value of the coat, so it's a win-win deal.

"We aren't at all worried that the homeless people will be attacked for wearing fur because the coats have a subtle dark band shaved into the arm to both take away their resale value and to show they are part of the coat donation program," Mathews added.

The shark on the street doesn't care about a coat's being part of a donation program. And what if the person in need gets back on track and wants to keep the coat?

I've inadvertently bought clothes for my children and for myself that, upon further inspection, I deemed to be against what's left of my values.

I hated to have to throw away this T-shirt I'd just bought for Buddy last month. It had all the colors in it that would work well with another pair of athletic pants I'd bought him. Plus, I got it on sale! But I digress.

It wasn't until I got ready to iron the shirt that I noticed obscure images of crossbones and flying skeletons - an homage to spiritism. Why push the demons on another person's kid?

Should a former hooker who's trying to land on her feet donate her crotchless pants to a young stripper?

If I realize the mini-skirts I wore in high school were no more than handkerchiefs with waistbands, would I be in my right mind if I gave them to displaced people when I have a closet full of suitable attire?

If a person accepts the health consequences of smoking and gives it up, should he give the cigarettes to the next smoker?

PETA's giving the fur coats to humans prompts the same conscience check.

The parts of the program that use the coats for education and as bedding for orphaned animals seem most practical. Could the donated fur be made into coats for sick animals? There is at least one dog in my neighborhood that looks as if it needs a whole-body toupee.

Back to Bruni-Sarkozy. She replied that she does not wear, buy or own animal fur and that any recent photos of her in fur don't depict real fur. Good for her. And I'd bet that she could donate dozens of nonanimal coats, too, as most of us could.

How can you tell someone her fur coat is morally wrong and then give it to someone else, especially when nonanimal clothes come a dime a dozen?

And can you imagine what you'd look like - if you were to become homeless - standing on the street with a "Will Work for Food" sign but you're wearing Mimi's rigged fur coat?

I'd rather go naked. I'd look just as crazy.

Prairiedog, I agree with you

Prairiedog, I agree with you 100%.

The program is a good way to help people and animals

While I agree that fur is reprehensible and should not be bought by anyone, I see the point and the good in the program. Nothing can bring these poor animals back to life and giving the furs to the homeless with an armband to make a statement, devalue the coat, and indicate that the wearer did not purchase it, not only helps keep people warm, it does prompt people, including reporters, to talk more about how cruel the fur industry is. I am a PETA member, but how people feel about PETA is not truly a relevant point here. The important thing is that these old, unwanted coats are being used to help stop animal and human suffering.

I Agree

I totally agree with this story and to celebrate this just cause, I plan to have a steak dinner tonight.

...Larry...

I wonder...

...who has the exterminaton contract for the PETA building???...someone out there knows!!!

Um, I think you're missing the point

PETA gives away donated fur coats for the same reason they conduct other demonstrations...to draw media & the public's attention and get the conversation going. I can imagine this tactic is as effective as most of what they do: this article alone proves it. It also proves that the simple-minded media and public could use some enlightening about these issues.

Critisize PETA if you like, small-minded folks, but these people are doing important work. What are you doing to help?

The meat industry would like to thank you

The meat industry would like to thank you for continuing to talk about PeTA, which always reminds people that they are hungry for meat.

Oh, and that was a great example of marxist argument techniques where you daemonize those you disagree with and try to belittle them. Ad hominem attacks are always so much better than addressing reality.

The other poster who asked about PeTA's exterminator: that's brilliant. All buildings and whole areas in the city have extermination contracts, and PeTA is no different. It would be interesting to find out who does it.

Of course, hypocrisy is the name of the game, so in the end it doesn't matter.

PETA

This is a radical group more interested in controlling people than protecting the environment. I say, lets send them all the flies, ticks, etc, etc. Lock them in with the critters and see how long it takes for them to yell for the "RAID". Oh and BTW - I have fur and leather coats that are family heirlooms. If I wear these beloved coats and one of them tries to deface or destroy them, I will dump them like a bag of dirt.

Tyranny

My sibling is fanatical too, embracing every animal society forgets. If I ignore the Genesis story I might also be fanatical but God assigned authority over animals to mankind. Mankind does not have an exemplary record in this duty but to say mankind has no authority regarding animals is a denial of the creator's will. Championing guns is akin to animal causes; logically, both have no voice.

No logic detected

Championing guns is not the same as animal rights.

The guns are the rights of people, and it is perfectly logical and necessary for the maintenance of a free state.

In fact, my family is armed and has fought for this country, and for the loonies inside it like PeTA.

That's the double edged sword of freedom: your neighbor has to be free too! :)

Hahahahah

Peta is a freaking joke

PETA

Hypocrites, Hypocrites, Hypocrites, Hypocrites. It's hard for me to believe people actually donate money to this urban terrorist organization. They should be in Gitmo!

Just Another Example

Good points.

This is just another example of the irrationality of fanatical fringe groups with no basis of reality in the world the rest of us inhabit.

Too funny!

THANK YOU! (insert roll in the floor Laughing Smiley)

I needed a good laugh with my coffee!

PETA and Fur

Thank you for giving me a chance to be reminded that sanity has not gone out this life's windows all together. I am with you on this one! I agree with every point you made. I love and respect animals and I realize that PETA and its supporters are fallible. But, besides the obvious contradiction of this specific case, I can't help thinking...how about the myriad of children that lack basic care, should we really worry about flies, flying, annoying germ carriers, being "inhumanly" swatted?
