Young trees were the victims of vandals over the weekend in the Steeplechase community off Shoulders Hill Road, said city spokeswoman Debbie George.

The destruction occurred in several yards in the North Suffolk neighborhood. One of the residents with a destroyed tree heard something in her yard but saw nothing, she said. The vandals apparently struck late Friday and early Saturday.

George said five trees were chopped off near the bottom of their trunks: a cherry tree, two maples, a Japanese maple and an unknown type of tree.

Several other trees were slashed into with the hatchet or ax that was used in the crimes and may die, George said.

Anyone with information about the tree damage should call Suffolk police or the Crime Line at 1-888-LOCK-U-UP (562-5887).
