Trial delayed for man accused of killing NSU Guard

VIRGINIA BEACH

The trial for a man accused of killing a Norfolk State University security guard in her home last year was postponed Tuesday.

Tony B. Smith, 38, of Fort Hood, Texas, was arrested in January and charged with the March 1, 2008, killing of Lettrelle Mae Thornton.

Pamela L. Campbell - Smith's sister and Thornton's roommate on Pollypine Drive - also was arrested and accused of conspiracy and solicitation of murder. Prosecutors dropped those charges but retained the right to refile them.

Campbell reported to police that she had discovered Thornton unconscious in their townhome. Thornton, 69, was pronounced dead at the hospital, and police said she appeared to have been assaulted.

Smith's next court appearance was set for July 15.
