Red light cameras have been installed and are recording drivers at two new intersections, police said.
Cameras have been installed at the intersections of Princess Anne Road and Dam Neck Road and at Princess Anne and Lynnhaven Parkway, according to police.
For the next 30 days, drivers whose license plates are photographed by the cameras will receive a warning in the mail, police wrote in a news release. After the warning period expires at midnight on July 30, drivers will receive tickets.
The warning period for lights installed at the intersection of Virginia Beach Boulevard and Great Neck Road expires July 1, police wrote.

I think what Russb757 had to say, hits the nail on the head. Amazing how many people in the state of Virginia are opposed to stopping the negligence of so many people that KILL on our roads. Most of Virginian's want to use the small little cell phone as a typewriter (text mess) while driving! They do not want anyone or anything to stop them from running a red lights.Too Bad, someone has to step in. Police just can't be every where. A red light Camera works 24/7, works in all climates, does not need a vacation, does not need overtime pay, and works all holidays. It frees up the Police to perform other serious duties. if the argument is made that the camera's cause rear end collisions then maybe the offenders will stop tailgating. The idea that you must run a red light to avoid a rear end collision just shows how flippant drivers in this state take the seriousness of what can happen behind the well of a car. I have see the results of someone killed by being t-boned by a car. I could not sleep well for months after viewing the carnage. I say fine em and fine em to the max!!

I'm curious; do those of you who think cameras cause rear-end collisions also believe guns kill people?
WOW!
Excellent comment.
I bet the Pilot would never show that as the featured comment!

People are not trained to drive anymore, they are simply trained to steer. Proper DRIVING would solve a lot of area traffic problems. If everyone moved to the right lane unless they are currently passing someone traffic would flow smoother. If people learned to "read" the traffic in front of them, there would be less rear end accidents. When drivers learn to ask themselves "what if..." (what if that car swerves to avoid something in the road? what if they have a blowout or hit the brakes? what if the light changes?
Instead they are surrounded by tons of steel and feel "safe" so as long as they know where the brake pedal is and can steer to avoid purposely hitting something they think they can drive.
Now for the sad but true.... I actually hit the brakes and tried to stop for a yellow light. The guy behind me, swung around me and went through the intersection. (i failed to mention I was making a LEFT TURN from a left turn lane) well he made it safely through the intersection, but about a 1/10 of the mile down the rode he hit another vehicle. I did not see the accident, but stopped to render assistance. When the police showed up, this driver's "excuse" was that if I
If you ever had to cut an
If you ever had to cut an unresponsive kid out of a car at VB Blvd and Indy you would understand the need for these cameras. Cars do not do so well when they are t boned in the passenger door at 50 mph. As for rear end collisions, if you are following at a proper safe distance and realize that the light you are approaching is a " stale " green you would be prepared to slow and stop should it turn yellow then red. Instead in our area green means maintain 50 mph regardless of the length of time the light has been green and yellow means accelerate. Not exactly the intent of the traffic control system. By simply being more aware of your surroundings the risk of the rear end collision is almost zero and more importantly the risk of a t bone accident is eliminated.
False flash
The other night it was late and I was at the light at Great Neck and VB. As I pulled up to stop for the red light a very bright flash went off. It startled the heck out of me. There didn't seem to be anyone in the intersection at all. Could it be someone went over that invisible stop line but not into the intersection? Since the intersection was empty with only about 5 cars to be seen this could be the only explanation.
Red Light Camera Question
Does the camera take a picture of the front or back of the car?
There are still a few states that do not require a front plate (like WV). I would think that would be unfairly letting those drivers off the hook for a ticket and fine if it only took a picture of the front of the car wouldn't it?
WHY???
Why is that only Virginia Beach and NOT Norfolk, Portsmouth, Chesapeake, Hampton, and Newport News have the red light cameras? It's because the City of Virginia Beach is GREEDY and has to pay off the money they sunk into that the money pit called the "Town Center."
Give'em time
The other cities will wise up too and install them. Anything that is a force multiplier is a welcome addition to any police force. Gives them more officers to work on other safety and criminal issues.
Money?
So just how much money has VB made of the active cameras?
