An unlikely hero

I suspect that when the full saga of Lauren Cootes is finally told two heroes will emerge.

One is the extraordinary Cox High School senior herself, of course.

The other will be the common-sense Virginia Beach school superintendent who shook off silly rules and inflexible regulations to do the right thing.

First, let's applaud Lauren. This 17-year-old has been fighting two wars recently. One against cancer. Another against heartless  bureaucrats who want to deprive her of a high school diploma because she hasn't taken one part of the SOLs. Never mind that she's an honor student. Or that she's already been accepted to a fine university for the fall.

Next, let's give a shout out to James Merrill.

When was the last time a school superintendent acted boldly and heroically?

Just this week, it seems.

After an exchange between Merrill and state officials on Monday - privacy regs prevent us from knowing what was said - the Cootes family was told that not only would Lauren get her diploma, but that the superintendent himself would be happy to bring it to her room in Children's Hospital of The King's Daughters.

Take that, Richmond!

Oddly enough, about that same time on Monday the state education honcho, Patricia Wright, fired off a memo to all Virginia school superintendents reminding them that there were to be no exceptions to the state standards.

Sheesh.

Someone needs to remind Tim Kaine's administration - heck, I'll do it - that they're running the Department of EDUCATION not the Department of Rigid  Rules and Ruthless Regulations.

Here's a thought: Next time a Virginia governor needs someone to head the department of education, he should take a trip to the  Beach where at least one person understands the purpose of a high school diploma.

Cox HS needs to accept some blame

From my sources, I understand that Cox HS completely forgot about the SOL exam Lauren didn't take, and panicked because they only realized it a couple of weeks ago. So the hastily thrown-together portfolio didn't meet the standards. Also, there *is* an extraordinary circumstance consideration, but, again, Cox HS waited too long for that consideration, also.

Funny how none of this came out in the article. Could it be because Kerry got her info from Cox HS, and they of course would not accept any blame?

Kerry, would you research the above and see if it is true?

Superintendents

It's nice to know that at least one superintendent has done right by students. I've read so many other reports in the past few days in which superintendents were drunk on their power that they denied well-earned diplomas to students over trivial stuff not related to academics. Is it any wonder why some students and teachers make it a point to make life hell for administrators?

Congrats to Ms. Cootes and I wish you all the success in your future endeavors!

Thanks to Mr. Merritt, Kerry, and others for fighting for this young lady. Perhaps Ms. Cootes will pay it forward in her life to people who need an advocate.

Congratulations, Lauren.

Congratulations, Lauren. May this be the first of many accolades you receive in your educational pursuits.

Good job, Dr. Merrill, Kerry, and others who intervened in Lauren's behalf.

Coverage

We can all give a yell in favor of her getting her diploma if there is some coverage on graduation night! Love to document that one in pictures!
What a great day! Anyone who helped push this is to be commended.

THANK YOU!!

Thank you for your WONDERFULLY written article in Sunday's paper about Lauren (as well as today!) I'm so thankful for people who are fighting for this precious girl when she's so weak, she can barely fight for herself. She 100% absolutely positively deserves to graduate on Saturday!!! THANK YOU THANK YOU!
