Va. Beach workshops to focus on Lynnhaven River

Posted to: Environment News

VIRGINIA BEACH

The Army Corps of Engineers and the city of Virginia Beach will hold three workshops, beginning with one Wednesday night, to discuss proposed strategies for restoring the Lynnhaven River.

The corps recently released the initial results of a major study about the environmental health of the Lynnhaven and suggested several ways to reverse years of pollution and other water-quality problems.

Among those likely to stir debate: reopening several freshwater lakes, created by dams years ago, to re-establish tidal action in each.

The first public forum will be from 7 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at Princess Anne High School, 4400 Virginia Beach Blvd.

The second one will be from 7 to 8 p.m. June 25 at Great Neck Recreation Center, 2521 Shorehaven Drive.

The third is scheduled from 7 to 8 p.m. July 1 at Bayside Recreation Center, 4500 First Court Road.

For more information, call the city at (757) 385-4621, or the corps at (757) 201-7258.
