The Western Branch High School assistant principal who was charged with driving under the influence earlier this month has been transferred to the school division's central offices.

Deana Otwell will work out of the office of Standards of Learning assessment as a result of the incident, said school spokesman Tom Cupitt.

Otwell had been the assistant principal for instruction at Western Branch.

Otwell was in an accident involving two other cars at the intersection of Taylor Road and Dunedin Drive on June 12, hours after the school's graduation ceremony, according to police.

Otwell was arrested.

The drivers of the other two vehicles were taken to the hospital with minor injuries.

Otwell also is being charged with refusing to allow police to take blood or breath samples.

Court records show Otwell previously pleaded guilty to a DUI in 2005.
