Jeff Lawson, chief meteorologist for WVEC-TV News 13, is recovering from surgery following a bicycling accident on Saturday.
Lawson, a nationally ranked champion bicyclist, broke a vertebra and separated his shoulder during a state time trial in Smithfield. Just three miles into the 28-mile run from Smithfield to Isle of Wight and back, the chain on Lawson's road racing bike slipped. He was clocking about 30 mph when he was catapulted forward. He had shoulder surgery at Bayside Hospital several hours later.
Lawson, who has won a number of state championship races, made Saturday's time trial run as a "tune-up" for Wednesday's USA Cycling national championship in Louisville, a race in which he placed 13th in the 50 and older category last year. He was hoping to score below 10 in this year's national competition.
Lawson said today he hopes to be back on the air in a few days.

Accident Causes
There are a wealth of additional causes of motorcycle accidents that occur quite frequently as well. One in particular is motorcyclists who are inexperienced and simply do not know the limitations of their machine hence, these new riders push their motorcycles to their threshold, which, in most cases, far exceeds the speed limit. This brings about another common cause of motorcycle accidents. The freedom of the open road and the thrill of going so fast at a mere few inches from the asphalt but, traveling at velocities over the speed limit can have dire consequences. Thus, speeding can be very dangerous and is often the cause of motorcycle accidents. For more details log on to Personal injury lawyers.
Best wishes, Jeff!
Get well soon!
And for those of you who think this is only being publicized to get attention for Jeff prior to a run for office, Jeff is one of those born again conservative guys. If he were running for office, would the Pilot do anything to help him? Think about that a minute . . .
Accident
Well wishes for a speedy recovery...I had to reread the last line...glad it didn't say 'in' the air!
Bicycling
Bicycling can be dangerous. More Americans are killed bicycling than any other sport.
Settle Down People...
Is it only news if it informs us of death, destruction, or depression? Is it only news if it is something that pertains to a topic of individual interests? It is a comunity interest story with no hidden political agenda. It amazes me how, as benign a story this was, it can be used as a soapbox for the decay of western civilization.
nobody denied
it's news fit to print.
Just wondering why a relatively minor human interest story deserves to run in that prominent a position for what is an unusual length of time, when other events w/ potentially much greater impact on us & even caused a local Congressman to break ranks with his Party, gets nary a word.
Sorry, I smell an agenda here.
agree
I've watched jeff for years and he is my favorite meteorologist due to his easy going instructional style, and I wish him a speedy recovery and feel his disappointment of not being able to make that contest.
BUT let
's get back to the more important matters of changing from the free market, pioneer built America that our grand and great grand fathers sacrificed so much to maintain, to only now watch their grand & great grand sons tear down in a matter of a few months thru creative propaganda Nazi style, and underlying evil maneuvers to further the cause of Kruschev's destruction from within philosophy.
Is Jeff an uber Lib getting ready to
run for office or something?
While this is newsworthy to an extent (and I join the others in wishing Jeff a speedy recovery) is this really deserving of not only 2 days running, but being bumped up to the very top of the Local News on the second day?
So there's plenty of type space & writers to give local celebrity fluff, but not enough to yet bring us an account of a major news item like last Friday night's voting by the House on the hotly contested Cap & Trade Bill - the monumental tax increase disguised as an environmental initiative that was also uncharacteristically opposed by a local Congressman?
For those wondering why a once respected paper is suffering in the credibility & readership departments, I think I know why.
To Moose
I remember Hurricane Isabelle. It was a tough one. My home and farm sustained $10,000 in damage. I lost half my barn's roof. Now, wherever you live, you may have thought it was a cakewalk, but I was at ground zero. I appreciate the hard efforts of Jeff Lawson, spending the night at the station. He really did an excellent job. He will be sorely missed from 13's Weather, as well as out there riding on the bike.
LOL!!!
He didn't die, he will be back to work in a week or so. Gotta ask you though, did you get up there and fix your roof? I fixed mine from where one of my neighbors trees sent a limb through it. Having been born and raised on the coast, I keep a few sheets of plywood and some shingles around. Since the power here was out for over two weeks after Isabelle, I ran my generator a few hours everyday with the gas that I keep on hand also. We cooked the supply of food we keep on hand on our propane grill and propane camp stoves. It's called, KNOWING you live on the coast and hurricanes and storms are a way of life. Being prepared to survive for a few weeks takes very little effort or brain. Again, I wish him a speedy recovery.
isabelle and moose
I had friends and family without power for almost 6 weeks. Heck some of them not only repaired their roof they climbed the utility poll and did the re-wiring. You might try that the next time, so you aren't without poweer for two weeks. You know what I mean?
Sometimes we need an idiot filter on this thing
Think about this...just because a thought pops into one's mind doesn't mean it needs to be shared because you have a computer! And you know who you are...ahhh, well you probably don't. Anyway, I hope Mr. Lawson recovers quickly for himself and his family.
Those of you who think this is the time to b***h about the weather need to think about how you have never made a mistake in school or at work. I bet most of us don't have a job nearly as tough as forecasting weather...and yet I know some of you are the ones who can't seem to understand why I would order a burger with NO ONIONS. Sorry your kid's party got rained on!
Go bloviate somewhere else...or at least take a breath mint.
Moose, You used "heels"
Moose,
You used "heels" which is the plural of heel, the bottom part of a foot. To recover, or get better is to heal. Just thought you would like to know next time you want to point out the mistakes of others.
Hang in There, Jeff
Sounds like Jeff had a bad chain. I figure he was standing up to get more spin from the pedals when the chain slipped, catapulting him over the handlebars. I have had some close calls when my foot pulled out of the pedals doing the same thing. That's a touch accident, occurring right in prime racing season and in the summer. It's a killer on a Saturday when you can't get out there with your buds. Been there done worse, broken collar bone, separated shoulder, broken pubis bone in the pelvis, broken elbow. To think, we go through all these accidents just for fun and exercise.
Get well soon, Jeff. Remember the lady, who asked you if you were a gynecologist at a local bike party? That was my wife. Hang in there. You'll be back out there, soon.
Jeff
Hey Mr. Moose, how's about kicking a man when he is down. O, wait, you just did. Shame on you! Hang in there Jeff, we are pulling for a speedy recovery. God bless and keep you. pw in NC
?????
This is news?
scs
Call in Dr. Duane! He will give us all a correct report as he did for us years ago. He was the BEST.
Hope he heels quick.
But maybe as he's recovering he'll watch his peers on tv and realize just how ridiculous they look when they hype the weather and act like a little north-easterner or little hurricane is the end of the world. You would think these people have never lived on the coast before. Every little storm they hype it up to a cat-4. I will always remember my family laughing at him during Isabelle when he had his sleeves rolled up and tie undone like it was a physical stress to report on the storm. I'd like to have a job where I could be wrong most of the time and still be employed... Then again, maybe not. I do think he's probably a nice guy and hope he heels quick and fully.
I truly hope he heels fully and quickly
As far as Katrina and NO area. What caused the severe flooding was the failure of the levy walls. What made the problem worse is that after the failure most of the area residents would not get off their on tails to help themselves. For most, they could have walked for less than five miles and had been out of the area and could have sought help from there or, better yet, made their own. A good example of what to do was made by the young man that loaded up the school bus with people and drove it to Texas. Many people in that area just sat back and waited to be catered to. The day after Isabelle my neighbors and I had our yards and our road cleaned and all the debris stacked on the road by noon. We didn't wait for someone to come and do the work for us. It's called being self-sufficient.
Hope you heal quick
Moose, are you hoping that Jeff heals quick or was this an avenue to preach your opinion on the behaviors of "all stations" weather man during dangerous weather? I am confused.
I would rather be over informed then under informed and WVEC has the most reliable forcasts out of all the networks! They are very accurate in their forcasts and their team is all "Meteorologists" unlike some stations.
Hang in there Jeff, we believe in you, our prayers are with you and keep up the great work.
FYI Thanks to the WVEC team for filling in for him.
