Jeff Lawson, chief meteorologist for WVEC-TV News 13, is recovering from surgery following a bicycling accident on Saturday.
Lawson, a nationally ranked champion bicyclist, broke a vertebra and separated his shoulder during a state time trial in Smithfield. Just three miles into the 28-mile run from Smithfield to Isle of Wight and back, the chain on Lawson's road racing bike slipped. He was clocking about 30 mph when he was catapulted forward. He had shoulder surgery at Bayside Hospital several hours later.
Lawson, who has won a number of state championship races, made Saturday's time trial run as a "tune-up" for Wednesday's USA Cycling national championship in Louisville, a race in which he placed 13th in the 50 and older category last year. He was hoping to score below 10 in this year's national competition.
Lawson said today he hopes to be back on the air in a few days.

Accident Causes
There are a wealth of additional causes of motorcycle accidents that occur quite frequently as well. One in particular is motorcyclists who are inexperienced and simply do not know the limitations of their machine hence, these new riders push their motorcycles to their threshold, which, in most cases, far exceeds the speed limit. This brings about another common cause of motorcycle accidents. The freedom of the open road and the thrill of going so fast at a mere few inches from the asphalt but, traveling at velocities over the speed limit can have dire consequences. Thus, speeding can be very dangerous and is often the cause of motorcycle accidents. For more details log on to Personal injury lawyers.
Best wishes, Jeff!
Get well soon!
And for those of you who think this is only being publicized to get attention for Jeff prior to a run for office, Jeff is one of those born again conservative guys. If he were running for office, would the Pilot do anything to help him? Think about that a minute . . .
Accident
Well wishes for a speedy recovery...I had to reread the last line...glad it didn't say 'in' the air!
Bicycling
Bicycling can be dangerous. More Americans are killed bicycling than any other sport.
Settle Down People...
Is it only news if it informs us of death, destruction, or depression? Is it only news if it is something that pertains to a topic of individual interests? It is a comunity interest story with no hidden political agenda. It amazes me how, as benign a story this was, it can be used as a soapbox for the decay of western civilization.
nobody denied
it's news fit to print.
Just wondering why a relatively minor human interest story deserves to run in that prominent a position for what is an unusual length of time, when other events w/ potentially much greater impact on us & even caused a local Congressman to break ranks with his Party, gets nary a word.
Sorry, I smell an agenda here.
agree
I've watched jeff for years and he is my favorite meteorologist due to his easy going instructional style, and I wish him a speedy recovery and feel his disappointment of not being able to make that contest.
BUT let
's get back to the more important matters of changing from the free market, pioneer built America that our grand and great grand fathers sacrificed so much to maintain, to only now watch their grand & great grand sons tear down in a matter of a few months thru creative propaganda Nazi style, and underlying evil maneuvers to further the cause of Kruschev's destruction from within philosophy.
Is Jeff an uber Lib getting ready to
run for office or something?
While this is newsworthy to an extent (and I join the others in wishing Jeff a speedy recovery) is this really deserving of not only 2 days running, but being bumped up to the very top of the Local News on the second day?
So there's plenty of type space & writers to give local celebrity fluff, but not enough to yet bring us an account of a major news item like last Friday night's voting by the House on the hotly contested Cap & Trade Bill - the monumental tax increase disguised as an environmental initiative that was also uncharacteristically opposed by a local Congressman?
For those wondering why a once respected paper is suffering in the credibility & readership departments, I think I know why.
To Moose
I remember Hurricane Isabelle. It was a tough one. My home and farm sustained $10,000 in damage. I lost half my barn's roof. Now, wherever you live, you may have thought it was a cakewalk, but I was at ground zero. I appreciate the hard efforts of Jeff Lawson, spending the night at the station. He really did an excellent job. He will be sorely missed from 13's Weather, as well as out there riding on the bike.
LOL!!!
He didn't die, he will be back to work in a week or so. Gotta ask you though, did you get up there and fix your roof? I fixed mine from where one of my neighbors trees sent a limb through it. Having been born and raised on the coast, I keep a few sheets of plywood and some shingles around. Since the power here was out for over two weeks after Isabelle, I ran my generator a few hours everyday with the gas that I keep on hand also. We cooked the supply of food we keep on hand on our propane grill and propane camp stoves. It's called, KNOWING you live on the coast and hurricanes and storms are a way of life. Being prepared to survive for a few weeks takes very little effort or brain. Again, I wish him a speedy recovery.
