56 Virginia schools join veterans education program

RICHMOND

Fifty-six schools in Virginia are participating in a national program that allows veterans who served after Sept. 11 to obtain an undergraduate education at no cost.

The Obama administration said Monday that the participating schools include universities, colleges and community and technical schools.

Each school has entered an agreement with the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs to participate in the Yellow Ribbon Program. The program pays for tuition, fees and housing and provides a stipend for books and supplies.

New VA Benefit

Just because a school isn't listed doesn't mean it will cost you anything either. The Yellow Ribbon program is for schools whose tuition is more expensive than the priciest state public university tuition. In other words, if you choose a public 2- or 4- year school in Virginia, you're already covered.

Check with your local college or university Veterans Affairs Office first! You may find a tremendous savings already exists without having to commute or pay a premium for an online education. And don't forget to file for financial aid at www.fafsa.ed.gov! Federal aid funds are not counted against your VA benefits and vice versa. There are also new programs aimed at spouses, too! My CAA and the Transfer of Entitlement for Chapter 33 to name a few.

Thanks for your service!

it is transferrable to the spouse, children of the service member if they choose to...

Comment

Unless the rules have changed again in the last day or so, these benefits are not transferable to spouse or children as a retired member. The service member must be on active duty to transfer these benefits. However, the websites already listed can provide up to date information.
