After visit, Forbes more sure Gitmo must stay open

U.S. Rep. Randy Forbes, just back from a fact-finding trip to the U.S. military prison at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, says the visit reinforced his opposition to closing the facility and moving the detainees held there to the United States.

President Barack Obama has pledged to close the prison by January, pleasing human rights advocates who said reports of inhumane treatment there stained the nation's reputation. But the White House said Monday that a task force studying how to do that has been given another six months to deliver its recommendations.

That delay poses a "huge difficulty" for prosecutors building cases against detainees suspected of terrorist activity, Forbes said Tuesday.

Forbes, a Republican from Chesapeake, visited Guantanamo with three other members of Congress.

He said the chief prosecutor there, Navy Capt. John Murphy, told them that because of the delay, he will be forced to seek a continuance of the cases against the suspects in the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks.

"If the judge doesn't allow the continuance, and it's far from certain that they will, he may have to drop the charges," Forbes said.

Moreover, he said, the military already has a state-of-the-art secure facility at Guantanamo for trying the detainees. There is nothing like it in the United States, he said, and building a comparable facility could cost up to $100 million.

The Guantanamo prison houses about 240 detainees. The Bush administration acknowledged some were subjected to harsh techniques such as waterboarding, which simulates drowning. The detainees are well treated now, Forbes said.

"They have better health care than most of our senior citizens have here in the United States," he said. There is a fully equipped hospital, he added, and detainees on hunger strikes can even choose what flavor of Ensure they will be given when they are force-fed. Butter pecan is the top choice, he said.

If the detainees are moved to the United States, Forbes said, guards will have to be specially trained to handle them.

"These guys have a type of mind control and controlling nature on the other prisoners that we haven't seen here in the United States," he said.

Forbes has introduced legislation to prohibit the use of federal funds to transfer any of the detainees to Virginia. The administration has not proposed doing so.

Northwest Annex

The navy is building a jail at Northwest Annex in Chesapeake. Forbes must think the Guantanimo prisoners might be moved to the new jail.

Of the 240 prisoners, it has already been reported that Saudi Arabia is expected to take 100 of them.

Mr. Forbes' Reality

Mr. Forbes is a fine Christian man.

But Mr. Forbes might not know it but there are already dozens of people who have been tried with some serving sentences for terrorism right here in the United States since 911. Some are even transported to Virginia...NORFOLK no less!

Mr. Forbes fails to acknowledge this because he lacks courage to seek the truth. For this honesty, one needs an open mind.

Mr. Forbes, they are already here, being tried and jailed...in your backyard.

You know Jane Harman. Ask her.

I believe that you are

I believe that you are referring to 2 or 3 people who were arrested, confined, tried, and convicted right here in the U.S (there was also 1 who was arrested in Afganistan). I believe that you might be referring to those who are American citizens. While I don’t agree with their extremism or their blatant treason to the U.S., never-the-less, they were U.S. citizens protected by the U.S. Constitution. I do believe that Mr. Forbes does know that. The people he is referring to are the enemy combatants and conspirators of terrorism who are NOT U.S. citizens. Therefore, they are not afforded the rights and privileges covered in the Constitution. They fall under the Geneva Convention.
BTW, Mr. Forbes is pretty darn open minded. To imply that anyone does not have an open mind makes your arguement invalid. Stick to the issues and stay away from personal attacks.

I have an idea...

Why not just execute them all and save the American taxpayers a ton of money?

Bring them to the U.S. mainland.

We don't need to build a new prison for them. I'm sure we could find 240 bleeding hearts who would gladly put them up in their homes while they awaited trial. Heck, you could find a bunch right in Hollywood: Alec Baldwin, Barbra Streisand, Bill Maher, Martin Sheen, et. al.. Angelina Jolie and Madonna might even adopt a few. Sign up Oprah for a few. Her mansions have scads of room! Then there are the liberal Dems who might find room for one their homes: Al Franken, John Murtha, Harry Reid, Arlen Specter, and Jim Webb. And I'm sure President Obama could share the White House with a few. Prisons? We don't need no stinkin' prisons!

So, Forbes...

is in line with the Congressional Dems who oppose closing it as well. Of course, those same Dems are on record of supporting the closing nof it WHEN OBAMA'S CAMPAIGN WAS IN FULL SWING! But now that the campaign is over, back to reality. What a bunch they are up there in DC!

Just wondering.....

Did Randy Forbes try to get a holding cell in Gitmo named after his Daddy?

Check the headline

If I read this correctly, your article and the headline don't match.

Not quite right

Headline show say that Congressman Forbes opposes the closing of Gitmo. Cheers

Earlier headline incorrect

Due to an editing error, the headline on an earlier version of this article incorrectly stated that Rep. Forbes supports the closing of the Guantanamo Bay military prison. Thank you for the alert.
