Arkansas St. to replace Syracuse on Tech's 2011 schedule

Posted to: College Football Sports

Virginia Tech has settled on the second half of its replacement for Syracuse on the 2010 and 2011 football schedules, but the latest addition isn't quite as sexy as the first.

After the Orange asked out of a home-and-home series, the Hokies announced last week that they would play Boise State at FedEx Field next season. Now athletic director Jim Weaver has confirmed that Tech will host Arkansas State in the fourth game of 2011.

While Boise is college football's winningest program of the last decade, the Red Wolves haven't had a winning season since 1995. Arkansas State is a member of the Sun Belt Conference and did manage to share the league title with two other teams in 2005.

Tech and Arkansas State have played two other times, in 1994 and 2002, both won by the Hokies. Tech outscored the Red Wolves 147-14 in those two games.

The Hokies' other non-conference opponents for 2011: I-AA Appalachian State at home and East Carolina and Marshall on the road. Arkansas State, meanwhile, continues its philosophy of taking on all comers. It will play at Louisville, Iowa and Nebraska this season. In 2006, Arkansas State lost to Texas by only a touchdown and scored 27 points on Tennessee.
