PORTSMOUTH
When the boss is in town, you had better put on a good show.
By all accounts, the Coast Guard didn't disappoint Monday morning, when its members performed an anti-terrorism exercise for Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napolitano.
The secretary boarded the cutter Frank Drew around 10 a.m. Soon after, the ship began making its way up the Elizabeth River under escort.
As it passed the shipping terminal, three 25-foot response boats swarmed up the water behind it. With one boat providing cover at the cutter's stern, Maritime Security Response Team members in the other boats clambered up the cutter's side toward the bridge.
A few minutes later, in the exercise's second phase, an MH-60J helicopter swooped in low behind the cutter and hooked a sharp left turn over its stern. A line dropped and, within 20 seconds, six team members had "fast roped" to the deck and proceeded to make their way across the ship.
Back pierside at the Coast Guard's Integrated Support Command, Napolitano hailed the team as a "vital part" of defending key ports such as Hampton Roads.
Since 2001, she said the Coast Guard's mission has continued to expand. Today, it includes not only the more traditional realms of search and rescue and vessel interdiction, but also smuggling, small vessel threats, piracy and anti-terrorism.
Napolitano said she's confident the Coast Guard can protect U.S. waters with the number of personnel it has now, though she said such service numbers are always under review. She added that she is working to make sure the service has the vessels and equipment it needs.
Napolitano said the Homeland Security Department is also taking a hard look at its port security grant program, to make sure it gives grants based on real assessments of risk. The Hampton Roads region received more than $26 million in such grants from fiscal years 2002 to 2007.
As a nod to the current state of the economy, she said her department is looking at waiving the grants' matching requirements, which can be prohibitive to some localities.
The ultimate goal, she said, is being ready.
"If we're prepared," she said, "we're not in fear."
Capt. Keith Smith, the response team's commander, was on hand Monday to watch his people in action. As the service's only maritime counter-terrorism unit, he said the bar was high.
"It's a rare opportunity that you do not want to drop the ball on," he said. "So I think we did well."
The Chesapeake-based team, which formed in 2004, is designed to handle threats along the coast or offshore, alone or as part of an interagency team. Monday's exercise gave the team members a chance to show their ultimate boss what they can do.
"We wanted her to have a better understanding of what we do and how we fit into the big picture," Smith said.

SECURITY REPORT
Okay, I've done all my homework and covered all the reading material. Here is the final report for all you sharp-eyed, rapier-witted readers.
This Just In: Janet Napolitano STILL a useless, overpaid, clueless Idiot!
Military-Industrial-Political Complex
This hyrdaheaded bloodsucker bleeds the taxpayer. It's about money=power.
We already have enough missiles to blow up the world how many times over. Souped up boats to protect the entire East coast? Is another country going to invade us by naval assault?
Hello?
Disband the ENTIRE "Homeland Security" department. Why? Waste, duplication, fraud, mismanagement, and bureaucracy.
Even with the Mutual Assured Destruction policy still in place for Russia, or anyone else, we still send expeditionary forces to secure the oil empire in the worst places on earth.
The political elites who tell the military what to blow up or who to kill need "media" opportunities to show they are taking their "job" seriously.
She's only making an appearance for "the troops" on the front lines of Homeland Security in Portsmouth. Maybe she's also bringing JOBS!!!
Real agenda
Do ya think JANAP is really feeling these Coast Guard guys, like the Veterans she condemned recently due to their patriotism, expertise & military training, might someday be potential dangers to Big Gov & has decided she personally needs to come to town to keep an eye on things?
Too bad she hasn't taken such an interest in securing our borders.
Twisting in the wind.
Are gross generalizations, hyperbole and wild assumptions all you have?
Since we're playing
20 questions, have you forgotten how she dissed all Vets (or are ya just conveniently overlooking the fact?) Maybe that stuff don't matter to you but it does to me.
So are you getting a bailout? Illegal alien?
IMO, JANAP's typical of BHO's selections: divisive & obviously just a political hack getting payback for services rendered or expected. Her performance while governor of a border state sure didn't qualify her for the job.
Until she takes her position seriously, i.e. secures our borders, she's no different from, & just as bad as, Dubya's boy Chertoff.
'Course, with BHO's "Amnesty for Illegals" right around the corner, it's a sure bet she'll continue to do nothing.
Har!
That's ripe.
cool rambo show
Boy, am I glad our coastline is safe. You know, because ever since Ronald Reagan single-handedly ended the Cold War with his God like power to Destroy the Soviet Union, we are at risk of attack from-- hmm-- wait-- do we even have any enemies with a regular army, let alone any naval wherewithal? How many weeks does it take a submarine to sail from Pyongyang to Portsmouth and how many times will it have to stop along the way to refuel?
Your tax $ at work
There is a small fleet of aluminum/stainless steel boats that roar up and down the creeks and rivers here every day and do nothing that is observable as useful. Kinda like TSA at the airport....Thousands Standing Around.
Just remember that the next
Just remember that the next time you want the Coast Guard to come out and search for someone in your family that is lost, ok? You don't want them to practice Search and Rescue because that is wasting your tax dollars.
Homeland Security
repelling us out and away from our Constitutional rights . . .
What a Joke on DHS
Janet Napolitano needs to fast rope out of the Department of Homeland Security. She is a joke.
