Democrat Creigh Deeds has already made good on one campaign promise. His news release Monday vowed to “ease congestion on the Chesapeake Bay Bridge-Tunnel.”
Consider it done.
Motorists in the region may have been surprised to learn there was any problem at the Bay crossing, but they were in no position to inspect the situation. They were all stuck in traffic jams at the Hampton Roads Bridge-Tunnel or the Monitor-Merrimac Memorial Bridge-Tunnel, both of which cross the James River, or the Downtown or Midtown tunnels under the Elizabeth River.
Why venture to the Chesapeake Bay looking for trouble when there’s so much close at hand?
Deeds’ staff posted a correct version of the transportation plan on his Web site, noting that they meant HRBT all along.
Given that it came in the dull dog days, the confusion isn’t likely to provide anything more than fodder for snide editorials. After all, Democrat Jim Webb beat a sitting U.S. senator in 2006 after admitting that he couldn’t find Craney Island on a map.
Truth to tell, some residents of Hampton Roads aren’t that familiar with the island, either, even though it’s the future home of the next major port expansion and would be easy to spot if Richmond ever found the money to pay for a third crossing of the James.
Even so, there’s no doubt that locals know full well the difference between the Chesapeake Bay Bridge-Tunnel (the one crossing the, ahem, Chesapeake Bay) and the HRBT. The HRBT is the one with the traffic jams. Deeds has spent enough time himself stewing in backups at HRBT to know the difference, too.
