Crews close 18 Virginia rest stops to save $9 million

RICHMOND

The Virginia Department of Transportation closed 18 rest areas today as part of a plan to cut nearly $9 million in expenses from a strained state budget.

Crews worked through the night to place orange barrels at entrance ramps of the rest stops to signal their closure, VDOT spokesman Jeff Caldwell said. The final rest areas were blocked off Tuesday morning. No problems were reported.

Seven rest stops along Interstate 81, four on I-95, four on I-85, two on I-64, and one on I-66 were closed. The Welcome Center on I-66 in Manassas will shut down in mid-September. The closest affected stops to Hampton Roads are on I-64 east and west at Goochland and on I-85 north and south at Dinwiddie and Alberta.

The agency also will change interstate signs and use electronic highway boards to reflect the closures.

State transportation officials last month decided to close 19 of the state's 42 rest stops to help ease a $2.6 billion budget gap over the next six years. Each rest area costs about $500,000 to operate annually.

AAA Mid-Atlantic called on Gov. Timothy M. Kaine to find the money to reopen the rest stops.

"Highway safety, not to mention comfort, hospitality and tourism, have today taken a big hit," the motorists' group's spokesman, Mahlon G. Anderson, said Tuesday in a news release.

Anderson expressed concern that tired drivers will "zoom past a closed rest area into harm's way, perhaps hurting others as well."

Kaine and Transportation Secretary Pierce Homer last week sought help from the state's congressional delegation to let Virginia to get around a federal law that bans commercialization of rest stops, but no help arrived.

The shutdowns also have become a campaign issue for the candidates in the gubernatorial race.

Republican Bob McDonnell says he would seek to change tranportation-funding priorities, ask groups to contribute to rest-area operations and consider using work-release prisoners and people ordered to perform community service to maintain the sites.

State Sen. R. Creigh Deeds, the Democratic nominee, has supported efforts to change the law to allow state rest areas to be commercialized. Deeds has said he'd reopen them within 60 days of becoming governor.

Save Allot on Toilet Paper in Public Toilets

I'll suggest something that would really save money in the rest stops = no toilet paper at all. Install bathroom bidet sprayers in all the toilets and all they'll need is a towel to dry off. It's cleaner, cheaper (yes for those who just have to object to everything water is cheaper than toilet paper!), it's better for the environment and it has health benefits. As Dr. Oz said on Oprah: "if you had pee or poop on your hand, you wouldn't wipe it off with paper, would you? You'd wash it off" This is a logical, doable and simple way to save allot of money and actually improve the toilet hygiene standards. But of course like all new ideas people will find countless silly and inane objections, that is the way of things. Theses sprayers are available at www.bathroomsprayers.com I installed mine myself, easy.

Rest stops

Well, I have seem some really stupid things that the State has done before but this one is on the top of the list. So, I guess we have to wait and see how many people are going to die before they re-open the rest stops just to save a few extra bucks. What the hell are they thinking. Now, people are going to stop on the side of the road to "empty their bladder" or walk their legs out, walk the dog, switch drivers, give me a break! Believe me, I drive for a living doing Mobile x-rays and when I get a page, I have to pull off the road to read the small print. Maybe the morons in Richmond should read the small print!

have you ever seen

Have you ever seen all those gas stations and fast-food chains at every exit on the Interstate highways? You can actually pull off at those and they will let you use their restrooms...and it doesn't cost me tax dollars for you to do it.

Why is it that everyone can

Why is it that everyone can see the idiocy of this move EXCEPT the people making the decisions?

no middle ground here...

VDOT could at least leave the rest areas open for parking so weary drivers could find a spot for a rest, and just close the facilities.

I guess I'll be parking in those "Authorized Vehicle Only" median crossovers when I get tired driving, or would Kaine prefer that I drive while sleeping....?

God made trees for a reason

And all those gas/food stops. Gas stations and fast food chains have toilets and the state doesn't maintain and operate them.

Got a dog with you? Pull off to the side where it's safe and legal, let yer pooch do it's business in the trees.

Come on folks - think out of that itty-bitty box.

Just FYI. The 12 rest areas

Just FYI. The 12 rest areas along the New Jersey turnpike made $36M in concession revenue in 2008.

It's a potential moneymaker for Virginia.

Mindless

Reading posters on this thread just hammers home why society is atrophying.

Sell the rest areas and put all the money in state coffers to be returned to taxpayers. No gimmicks. Lockbox.

NO LEASES! That invites corruption and even more waste.

In Summary: Shut 'em down. You have an issue; take the next right.

You low information voters can all go back to American Idol now.

Create 5 year leases for private businesses

This is a great opportunity for an entreprenuer and a good snack bar quick food outlet.
The state should put up bids and MAKE SURE that ARAMARK does not get the business. They already own the airports. This needs to be leased to the highest bidder and NO taxpayer assistance. If their business model is good and service and food quality great they should have no problem staying profitable.

Virginia Is For Lovers...

Just Don’t Expect To Be Able To Do A Number 1, Or Number 2...
If You’re Driving Through It.
