WINFALL, N.C.
A 37-year-old pilot died Friday evening after the crop duster he was practicing in crashed, according to the Perquimans County sheriff.
It’s unclear what time or how Jonathon Wilson, of Hertford, crashed because there were no eyewitnesses to the incident and he was dead when emergency crews arrived at the scene, said Sheriff Eric Tilley.
Wilson had been practicing to crop dust, Tilley said, so there was only water in the tanks and no chemicals.
Police were called to the 800 block of Swamp Road, north of Winfall, for a crashed plane at 7:31 p.m. Tilley said he and the county’s emergency management coordinator were out of the county, so neighboring officials from Gates and Pasquotank counties were called to help coordinate efforts until Tilley could get there.
The National Transportation Safety Board and Federal Aviation Administration were notified and will be investigating.
Holly Baker, a FAA spokeswoman, said investigators from Greensboro will handle the investigation.
