The field of Republicans who want to run against first-term U.S. Rep. Glenn Nye, D-Norfolk, is starting to get crowded.
Auto dealer and longtime GOP donor Scott Rigell is the latest entrant in a contest that is about 16 months away from an election.
Rigell, 49, shipped his paperwork to the Federal Election Commission on Tuesday. He said he is running to help Republicans regain control of Congress and restore fiscal discipline.
"The way I see it is there is a serious breach of duty taking place in Washington today. One that carries with it profound consequences that affect every American," said Rigell, the founder and president of Freedom Automotive, which has three dealerships in South Hampton Roads.
A married father of four, Rigell has the backing of Thelma Drake, who was defeated by Nye in her 2008 re-election bid. But he isn't the only Republican who covets the seat.
Attorney and former Marine Chuck Smith, a GOP activist from Virginia Beach, has been campaigning for months. Republican officials said several other contenders are eyeing the race.
They are Beach GOP Chairman Kenny Golden; Ben Loyola, a captain in the Navy Reserve and the owner of a Beach engineering firm; Ed Maulbeck, a retired Navy SEAL and defense contractor; and Hampton resident Bert Mizusawa, a brigadier general in the Army Reserve.
Maulbeck and Loyola say they have filed candidate paperwork with the Election Commission. Another candidate who had filed, Army reservist Thomas Wirges, said Wednesday that he does not plan to run.
The high level of interest among would-be GOP candidates is one indication of the belief among party officials that Nye's seat can be won back.
Nye, a former foreign service officer, in recent months has faced a barrage of attacks from the National Republican Congressional Committee. The group has funded a radio ad targeting the congressman and paid for an automated call critical of votes he ha s cast.
The 2nd Congressional District consists of precincts in Norfolk, Virginia Beach, Hampton, and Accomack and Northampton counties.

direct from the Waffle House, Glenn Nye
hey, all you Glenn Nye fan bois, if you can stop slobbering long enough, you might want to rethink some of that man love.
From Politico:
It’s tough to be Rep. Glenn Nye (D-Va.) these days.
After liberal blogger David Campbell contacted Nye’s office, urging the congressman to support climate change legislation, Campbell got a resounding thumbs-up from Nye’s office. Which is odd, considering Nye voted against the bill.

Well yes, Pablo, there is such a person, and his name is Glenn Nye.
My view of Nye. He's a nice
My view of Nye. He's a nice guy who rode in on Obama's coattails, and is caught between a conservative district and a highly liberal runaway national party. He caught a lot of heat after the stimulus vote that he supported and has been trying to vote more conservative since, which is smart if he wants any chance of re-election. Just as he rode in on an anti-Bush wave, he may ride out on an anti-Obama one.
Country going to the dogs!
I hear everyone blaming everyone for this mess. It amazes me that no one wants to admit that our elected officials are really tearing this country apart. Obama and his stimulus package hasn't produced the jobs he said and we're getting more in debt. Bush wasn't any better! Our elected officials need to set their party aside and come up with real viable plans to fix this mess!!! Blame who you want but the reality of it is that they're all playing politics with our country and children. That's unacceptable in my eyes!! Last time I read the 'US Constitution' it stated 'We The People' and not 'We The Political Parties'. It's just so frustrating that they can't set their parties aside and tackle the hard situations that plagues our country!!!! Are there any real men and women on Capital Hill that has the courage and guts to help solve my countries problems? If not, then you're not doing my country any justice!
Short Memory
Once again, the republicans seem to have suffered from amnesia in looking back at the conditions in effect in our nation when Nye took office, almost all of which were the result of eight years of total neglect of the responsibility to govern in the public interest by the Bush administration. First, we got attacked, second, one of our major cities got trounced by a hurricane and no one was at home in the White House or the federal bureaucracy. We launched a war against a country that had nothing to do with 9/11, failed to execute that intervention effectively, and then proceeded to dismantle necessary regulation so that banks and investment houses were allowed to speculate with our money, with no skin the game, to line the pockets of the rich and greedy "financial experts". So while we know now that we will make our way back, let us not forget the recklessness and irresponsibility of the republican fringe that took power and really messed up.
liberals have amnesia too...selective amnesia
Why is it that liberals have a short memory as well? The planned attack on 9/11 took several years, not 9 months, to organize. Who was at the helm that could have broken one of the first links? Bill Clinton. The very man who ignored opportunities to put a cabash on the whole plan. I don’t know of any administration that can control the weather and cause hurricanes. So, blaming GWB for Katrina is the deep end of lunacy. I can partly agree with your position on the Iraq war, but only at the point that it was incredibly mismanaged. As far as deregulation goes, it was the democrat congress that blocked attempts to regulate. This recession is owned and operated by the democrat controlled congress. You can only blame GWB for a few things, but most blame can be put on congress.
I notice how some keep
I notice how some keep looking back to blame the GOP for everything, and say not one word in defense of Obama and what the democrat congress has unilaterally done the past few months. That's what's called nervousness.
Health Care "Public Option" = Tidewater GOP's Rallying Cry?
I would find it a bit disingenuous if ex-military GOP challengers in the next 2nd District race (according to this article, that's most of the field) began to complain too much about the possibility of leveling healthcare benefits in the US through a greater Federal role in the process. Need we remind them who pays for their VERY generous medical benefits, as well as the VERY generous medical benefits of all retired Federal workers? One of the first people to remind us all of that situation was President Obama, and I look forward to doing my part to try and keep the GOP's hypocracy to a minimum during this next 2nd District election cycle!
Hypocrisy?
Really? So they (ex-military GOP wannabes) should abstain from obstructing a federal takeover of health care, that will ultimately decline in quality, because they have veterans health benefits WHICH THEY EARNED BY SERVING THEIR COUNTRY? Have you ever been to a VA hospital? You consider that "very generous" benefits?
The true hypocrites are the political elites that will inoculate themselves so that they will not have to take the very public option plan that this government will foist upon its taxpayers!
