Federal energy bill includes funding for Hampton Roads

Continued restoration of oysters in the Chesapeake Bay is among water projects funded in a bill passed by the U.S. Senate on Wednesday, Sen. Jim Webb’s office said.

Among Hampton Roads projects funded in the 2010 energy and water development bill:

- $2 million to continue oyster restoration and build more oyster reefs in the Lynnhaven estuary

- $1 million to continue updating navigation and security on the Elizabeth River in Norfolk

- $78,000 for a study of environmental damage near the Great Dismal Swamp National Wildlife Refuge

- $215,000 for a study to evaluate federal interest in protecting the Chowan River Basin in Chesapeake

- $220,000 to help localities along the Chesapeake Bay manage storm water

What we need most is to cut back on commercial fishing before it is too late for them to recover.
