As Fourth holiday nears, fireworks enforcement heats up

VIRGINIA BEACH

Parents would never hand a child a 1,200-degree piece of burning metal.

But that's exactly what they're doing when they light sparklers for their kids for July Fourth celebrations, said Battalion Chief Tim Riley, a spokesman for the Fire Department.

"A lot of people think they're innocent," he said, "but really, it's burning metal."

That's why the sparkling wands are among the illegal fireworks officials will be confiscating this weekend. The goal is to prevent fires and injuries, not to spoil people's Independence Day events, Riley said.

"We want people to have a fun, safe time," he said. "But they need to realize the dangers of the fireworks they're dealing with."

Most fireworks, except small items such as poppers, are banned within city limits. They're also illegal without a permit throughout the rest of Hampton Roads and in parts of northeastern North Carolina. In Hampton Roads, only Hampton allows sparklers.

Virginia Beach outlawed the pyrotechnic devices about 15 years ago but began heating up enforcement measures in 2007 after residents complained about violations, said acting Fire Marshal Capt. Terrence Tassone.

And this year will be the city's biggest crackdown yet, he said.

There will be seven checkpoints where police officers and officials from the fire marshal's office will ask residents to turn over any illegal fireworks, Riley said. Those who comply will not receive a citation, he said.

But those who refuse to fork over their fireworks or are caught lighting them will be charged with a Class 1 misdemeanor, punishable by up to a year in jail and a fine of up to $2,500, Riley said.

Enforcement will largely focus on the Chick's Beach area, Tassone said. Most of the 850 pounds of fireworks confiscated last Fourth of July came from there, he said.

"We have issues all over the city, including in Sandbridge and Croatan, but by far Chick's Beach has been a real problem for us," Tassone said. "The combination of people drinking and using alcohol and fireworks is a bad combination, and that's what we've found a lot of."

Signs posted Wednesday on Interstate 264, Shore Drive and the Chesapeake Bay Bridge-Tunnel warn visitors and remind residents about the ban, he said.

There will also be extra officials on duty to respond to fireworks calls in each of the city's four precincts.

Last July Fourth, illegal fireworks were responsible for 14 fires citywide, Riley said. Beach firefighters also helped extinguish a 500-acre blaze on a farm in Chesapeake that caused $100,000 in damage. It was caused by illegal fireworks.

There will be six legal fireworks shows in the city Saturday - at the Oceanfront, Mount Trashmore, Cavalier Golf and Yacht Club, First Landing State Park, and on 47th and 52nd Streets, Tassone said. They've obtained a permit and will have a fire inspector on-site, he said.

"Fireworks can do a lot of damage to people if they don't know what they're doing," Tassone said. "I just want people to be safe this year."

Where is our freedom

It is comming to the point where I do not question what is illegal. I ask what am I allowed to do. The Constitution gave us the right to Life, Liberty, and the Persuit to Happiness. Ever since it was signed, our ELECTED OFFICIALS, have taken things from us. We have our representation. People voted into office that lie and cheat their way in and then limit us to what we are allowed to do. YET, they will probibly have their backyard cookouts with sparklers because they are above the laws of the common man. So they believe. We are being striped of our rights with each law and ordinace passed. In time we will have no rights and become a communist government. I am sure that England said," Give it time, they will crumble within sooner or later". We did a little. It was the Civil War but, if the government keeps this up. Who knows, the people will get tired one day. History does repeat itself when we begin to forget why it happened last time.

The Land Of The What?

The word we are looking for here is: FREE! Just in case some of you may have forgotten what this country is based upon, read the Constitution! What a bunch of wimps! So, are you megalomanics going to arrest the majority of the people that resides here in the metropolitan area known as Hampton Roads? You can be very sure of one thing, my family and I are going to light off some fireworks. You (meaning authority wanna-bees) could direct your energies into being more proactive and helpful by releasing some videos to the news outlets on how to correctly light off certain fireworks, instead of trying to control everthing "you" deam as "unsafe" or in our "best interest". And you should try and make your money in a more honest manner instead of "stealing" it from the citizens that you are supposed to be representing!

Go ahead, you wanna Chesapeake Bay Tea Party?

Well...

THIS IS WHY WE CAN'T HAVE ANYTHING NICE!!!!

:D <--- that's a smilie face there

Of course they're dangerous..

When you have brutal images of one mannequin shanking another with a sparkler, it's going to look bad no matter what. Fortunately I never tried this as a kid.

ENFORCEMENT ON FIREWORKS

I live in the Scotfield section of Chesapeake,...fireworks are regularly set off most every weekend in several locations....guess what? several police officers live withing 25 yards of the "setting off".....hmmmmmmnnn

Question Authority

Some rules are made to be broken. This is one of them. I have fond memories of lighting fireworks off with my dad when I was a child. I am still alive no burns who would have thunk it. I will be providing my children this year with the same memories I had when I was a child. Don't be a lemming mindlessly conforming, question authority when it deserves to be questioned. Banning sparklers is so far over the top it is crazy. Instead come to one of our city run functions and watch subpar fireworks and spend your money. I am sure many of us have far better fireworks than there will be at mount trashmore or the beach anyway. Fight real crimes and let the patriotic americans have their very own red rockets glare so Francis Scott Key does not turn over in his grave. I bet our city leaders do not know who he even is.

John Adams on 4th of July celebration

"I am apt to believe that it will be celebrated by succeeding generations as the great anniversary festival. It ought to be commemorated as the day of deliverance, by solemn acts of devotion to God Almighty. It ought to be solemnized with pomp and parade, with shows, games, sports, guns, bells, bonfires and illuminations, from one end of this continent to the other, from this time forward for evermore." John Adams

How ironic this could be!

Fireworks are a traditional way of celebrating the 4th of July for well over a hundred years now. If we can’t do that any longer, what should we do to replace that tradition? Maybe we should do like other countries that celebrate their independence and shoot our legally open carried and concealed carried firearms into the air instead! Nah, I'm sure there must be a law against that too!

I wonder what all these safety, revenue collection and enforcement officials would do, if sick and tired Americans, with the last vestige of their rights, their sacred liberties and pursuit of happiness stripped away in the name of government knows best and has to protect us from ourselves, choose to discharge their firearms, pyrotechnic, explosive and incendiary devices against them, for stripping us of our right to celebrate the independence of our nation from an tyranny that ironically did exactly the same thing? I wonder how far off that day might be? After all, the 4th of July is about rebellion against government! How ironic would that be?!

Happy 4th of July America! Please try to remember what the 4th was and is all about!

Sparklers

The only people who hurt themselves with sparklers, are the same ones who weren't allowed to use forks as children because they kept poking themselves in the eye.

Hey RussB757

I was one of those "idiots" sledding down Trashmore when it was still legal. Actually, being from western Pennsylvania where there's real hills, it wasn't that big of a deal. But my 2 boys, now grown, still tell their kids about when Grandpa taught them to put a plastic lawn and leaf bag on their boogie boards so it would go alot faster in the snow! They crashed a few times, bled a little, and had a blast. And shortly after they were born, I got outa the Navy and was hired to protect and serve in a local PD. Thank God through all those years of dealing with the supposedly lawsuit crazy public, I never allowed the ignorant few to change my outlook on life, people and what constitutes a good time. I wouldn't trade my kids' memories for all the supposed "safety" the government thinks it can provide. Please stop trying to save us. We're really happy and doin' fine. Oh, and we had a few Roman candle battles back in the day, too.
