Grease fire damages restaurant near Busch Gardens

Posted to: News Williamsburg - James City

A grease fire in the kitchen injured a cook and seriously damaged a restaurant near Busch Gardens on Friday morning, an official said.

The two-alarm fire was reported at 9:17 a.m. at the Sportsman Grill, 240 McLaws Circle off U.S. 60 in York County, said Capt. Paul Long of the York County Department of Fire and Life Safety.

A firefighter was treated for a shoulder injury and a cook at the restaurant was taken to Sentara Williamsburg Regional Medical Center to be treated for injuries that were not life-threatening, Long said.

“The restaurant’s kitchen was completely gutted by fire,” Long said. “The patron seating area of the restaurant had smoke and water damage, and then there are two adjacent businesses that have some smoke damage.”

The cook was preparing to open the restaurant when the fire started, Long said. The fire was under control at 10:21 a.m.

Investigators are continuing to examine evidence, but grease appears to be the cause, he said.

York County firefighters were assisted by firefighters from James City County and Williamsburg. Firefighters from Newport News and the Yorktown Naval Weapons Station manned York County fire stations Friday while firefighters were on the scene.
