IVOR

In an attempt to help set a record, 317 people got naked and splashed in a giant swimming pool over the weekend at White Tail Resort.

The people at the nudist resort in Southampton County were part of what's billed as "The Largest Skinny Dip Across North America."

The American Association for Nude Recreation sponsored simultaneous skinny-dipping events across the United States and Canada and will send the results to Guinness World Records, which now has a category for the largest number of people skinny-dipping at once.

Some people had never skinny-dipped with strangers before, said Kim Winkler, the marketing director for White Tail Resort.

"They're so excited to be part of this Guinness world record," she said at the Saturday event.

Winkler spread the word with a news release on PR Web. Some participants said they heard about the event on Facebook. The resort has about 600 members.

No one seemed shy about baring tattoos, stretch marks and pot bellies for a dip into the resort's big pool.

Duane and Jackie Ison of Boones Mill were among the participants who drove several hours to reach the event. They've been to the resort about five times.

"You take your clothes off and you're done with it," Jackie Ison said. "Everybody's happy, having a good time. And if you've got your clothes on, then you look strange."

"It was great," Duane Ison said of his dip for the record. "It's really a lot of fun."

Participants had to sign their names and show their driver's licenses. They kept their licenses in plastic boxes they wore around their necks.

"You don't have any pockets when you're naked," Winkler said.

Swimmers did dances such as the conga and frolicked in the water to songs such as "The Loco-Motion."

Three notaries witnessed the signatures, which will be sent to Guinness along with photos recording the event, Winkler said.

The resort is hosting an open house this weekend with free admission for first-time visitors. The skinny-dipping event is being followed today with a "Cool Car Show."

Visitors are welcome to remain clothed. Unless they're getting in the pool.

"It takes about five minutes and you realize that this is the best thing you've ever done in your life," Winkler said. "It's so totally relaxing."

Morality viewpoint

I have found, over the years, that the people who scream the most about the morality of others are those who are uncertain about their own. For example: Congressman Foley of Fla, who protested the AANR Youth leadership camp in Fla, was guilty of sending suggestive e-mails to young pages. The congressman who insisted that Clinton should resign is being sued for divorce, his wife citing infidelity. Governor Sanford and Congressman Ensign who are connected to "the family" on C Street (a so-called bible study group) have both publicly acknowledged infidelity.
Perhaps the objectors to children at White Tail Resort are projecting their own proclivities on others.
White Tail Resort has been in existance for a quarter of a century, and is in good standing with the city of Ivor and Southhampton county. I'm sure that those good people would have responded appropriately to any sign of child abuse.

Whitetail park

I've been to this camp, I didn't even know anything about it, a friend brought me there as a joke. What I found was know laughing matter! There where children of all ages naked with there families. I feel this is a crime against children. It's a crime if a man exposes him self to a child. It's sick. Just because these sick petafiles don't see anything wrong with it, doesn't make it right. This is a breeding ground for petafiles! It needs to be shut down! These children are being stripped of there innocence and are being made to be naked in front of strangers, I'm ashamed of the Virginian pilot for glorifying this place. What happened to morality? I knew a little girl who's parents made her go there. She was very affected by her parents sick thrill. She hates her parents for doing that to her. She said it was like being raped over and over again by differant people. She was taken there from the time she was 7 till 12 years old. The time when girls are very insecure about there bodies. How is this place legal? What protects these children? What protects them from there own sick parents? I can't even imagine the helplessness she felt. These people need to grow up. You don't have to be

Well -------------

I guess everyone gets naked to bathe and if one goes swimming, one does it in a minimum of covering; take off that minimum and presto! you're naked. If you are ashamed of yourself that's your problem; if they're not ashamed then OK, go for it. Nudity was fine in the Garden of Eden until man(Adam & Eve) decided(the sin of rejecting God's will for his own) that for them nudity was wrong,so they were kicked out to organise a world more to their liking. The conflict between the creator and his creation in rebellion was on and will eventually be settled but in the meantime, Jesus will intervene to save-out those worth saving.

Agin everything

I dont know why Doc Tabor bothers to even take the time to comment. All he ever says is me to, or "I'me agin it". and sometimes makes up facts to suit him. His libaterian party is even more of a "Just say no" party than the republicans. The only local "Tea Party" was in Yorktown, and a short one in Newport News. Even that had limited numbers. The nudest story was more of a local interest. "Hollar" at the Daily News if "your" "Tea Party" didnt have the coverage you wanted.

You prove my point

The Pilot did report on the VA Beach Tea Party in April, but the larger followup in Chesapeake on June 26th was not reported before or after.

So, you assume it did not happen since you did not read about it, and that the Tea Party movement is unimportant, even though over 1000 people attended over the course of the day.

Political advocacy by newspapers can be overt, as on the editorial page(which is their right and the proper way for them to express their opinion), or in the news coverage simply by choosing what to print and what to ignore, which is not compatible with journalistic ethics.

It is their newspaper and they can do either or both, but when their political position influences to reporting of news, they should be called on it.

morals?

Most locals know that this "park" exists but you certainly don't have to flaunt your lewd acts on the front page. I must say the Pilot retains so much "integrity" - and that is why I do not subscribe to your "paper." Sensationalism Journalism at best - must be a slow news day. I am outraged and in disbelief that you would stoop to such a perverted low. People must take a stand for what is RIGHT and MORAL in this society - NOTHING is SACRED anymore.

I agree with you Har3

Lewd huh?

Wow, that truly is amazing. We were created in God's image and we were created nude. If we are lewd when we are nude that must mean that God is lewd.....interesting theory but definitely not one that I subscribe to.

It is man who created shame by disobeying God.....you have obviously skimmed over that page of the bible. Being nude is not about being immoral, it is about being as we were created.

I find it interesting that so many Christians are so judgmental. Seems like there is never a shortage of stones to cast. I didn't realize so many of you were capable of walkingon water!!!

Please re-read your bible my friend. The Lord is the only one capable of judging. God is also the only one that is worthy of determining if an act is lewd or immoral. Perhaps you should go hug someone instead of judge someone...God gave us many gifts "and the greatest of these is love"...it is a shame you don't appear to display the greatest gift of all.

Does God disaprove?

Yes, He greatly disapproves! I don't think these people really care what God thinks. They just want to do what they want, without consequence for there actions, whether or not the law intervenes, their children suffer the consequence. God himself clothed Adam and Eve. In Genesis 3:21, If he wanted man to be naked he would have just kept them naked. God created them to feel shame, for there wrong doing. You can't teach wrong and right without shame. That's why humans, when they do wrong, and feel bad about it, you will hear them say they are ashamed. It's a good thing to have shame, without it we wouldn't have a consciences. It's what makes us humble. It was God who permitted them to be naked and unashamed in the garden of Eden, it was when they sinned against God that they where kicked out and made to feel ashamed of there body's, They where no longer perfect. From that day on, All man is was created imperfect, and not in the likeness of God. Only Adam and Eve were made in a perfect likeness. I do not have to judge what other do, God knows there hearts. These children however need protection, and need to be taught write and wrong, these parents are teaching them wrong and raping t

Calm down and relax.

Chill out. Calm down and relax. They were going for the record that is why it is news worthy. Try not to get your blood presure up.

What's wrong with frivilous fun??

Isn't life rough enough out there? What's wrong with a little frivilous fun?

In a world where people are losing their jobs left and right, the economy is in the toilet, and we are watching our friends and neighbors lose their homes on a daily basis, what the heck is wrong with a little fun?

WTR is a fantastic friendly community where people of all ages, sizes, and races gather to dance, sing, play water sports, get some exercise, eat, talk, and have fun.

Get a life folks.....we have become entirely too serious of a nation. We need to learn how to let go of those tight pants that are binding us up, and creating such "business like" demeanor with every minute of every day.

Lighten up, have some fun, and for God's sake --- learn to enjoy being YOU.

To justme 12345

There is so many other thing a person can do for fun, besides bathe in a pool full of disease infested water, lord knows, you don't know these people or the virus they may have. I wouldn't call rubbing up to a stranger with sores on their parts, a weekend get a way. So big deal! They set a world record for being naked in a pool together. How is this important? or rare? Do you have nothing better to do than this,Why don't you volunteer your time to helping others in a positive way, If you like being in water help clean up the bay. That people will remember you for and respect you for. Nobody in will think back to this world record and care, but they will look back and say remember when all those people went out and cleaned the bay and saved all those helpless animals.Look how the world has desensitize themselves to thinking this is right or normal. If we start excepting the bad things as normal, we will reap the consequence. It's not normal to be naked in from of strangers or children. So stop blowing it off as if there's nothing wrong with this. What's next, thinking that sex with children is fun? It's ok because the economy is bad and we need to distress are selves? GET A real P

I say......

I fully agree with you, just me12345, people are just too serious and have to lighten up.

I read the Boston Globe

I read the Boston Globe everyday and it's news to me that it's going under! Source please? I thought this was a great article and appreciate the VP continuing to share the diversity of this area. I have no interest in visiting a nudist camp, but enjoyed reading the article. I also thought coverage for the bicyclists was interesting, although I have no interest in cycling on Shore Dr. I don't think the government is spending my tax dollars wisely, but I would've skipped yet another article about angry taxpayers. I do appreciate the VP coverage of how my representatives vote on bills affecting my tax dollars, which provides the most unbiased coverage I can get.

CLARIFICATION

I need to clarify this. NYT told the Globe's unionized staff that it needed $20 million in concessions in order to keep it afloat. The unions finally blinked and they have a tentative deal. For now. But the climate isn't changing much for newspapers and closures would not be surprising.

The Globe is in serious

The Globe is in serious trouble. It's owner, the New York Times, has hired Goldman Sachs to investigate a possible sale.

Don't be so serious!

Come on, folks--lighten up! That's all this event was about! If you take yourself so seriously that you would panic by being nude in front of strangers, then maybe you DO need to try out White Tail Resort--shed a few inhibitions, and learn to relax a bit. Plus, you'll get a nice even tan, and meet a few nice people--great way to spend a day in the sun. Bring sunscreen and a hat, and maybe a good book to read--and prepare to have the most relaxing day you've ever had!

No problem with the event

I have no problem with people engaging in nudity on private property. It is none of my business. And I have no problem with the Pilot covering it.

I further have no problem with the Pilot having an EDITORIAL position opposed to fiscal responsibility. That is their right and long standing policy.

What I am objecting to is the slant in the NEWS sections, expressing their bias through what they choose to ignore. Clearly, the Tea Party was a newsworthy event, far better attended than the skinny dip or the bike rally, and of a more serious nature, yet it was carefully ignored in spite of the Pilot receiving prior notice.

In the end, it is their paper, and they can bias both the editorial and news if they choose, but when they do, they should be called on it.

white tail park

I think the Va pilot should do a report on all the sexual predator, and a story on the devastating effects it's had on the children that were made to take there clothes of in front of strangers. All in the name of a good time. Have your good time and get as naked and as perverted as you want, But not with your children watching or involved. Your security comes from within, exposing yourself and your children in front of strangers, does not make you a better person it doesn't prove a thing, other than you have no respect for yourself or your children.

Pilot coverage of tea party movement

Here are links to stories and a video in The Virginian-Pilot in April about the tea party movement. Aside from that, let's please try to keep comments focused on the story. Thanks for reading PilotOnline! -Patrick Wilson, online news reporter, The Pilot.
