It's official. Virginia has a new record

The Virginia Saltwater Fishing Tournament just announced that a 14-pound, 14-ounce spadefish caught by Roland Murphy is the new state record for the species.

Murphy's fish also is under consideration as the International Game Fish Association all-tackle world record.

Murphy caught his giant June 13 at the Cell.

He was fishing with Allan King and was using a Penn Ocean master rod teamed with a Daiwa BG-30 reel. His braided line was leadered by 30-pound test fluorocarbon. The 1/0 Gamakatsu hook was holding a piece of clam.

The fish was 25 1/4 inches long and had a girth of 26 1/4 inches.

It topped the previous state record of 14 pounds.
