NEWPORT NEWS
A man was hospitalized in critical condition Friday morning after he was injured in a house fire, the Newport News Fire Department said. The fire was reported at 10:37 a.m. in the 800 block of Catalina Drive.
It took about 10 minutes for firefighters to get the fire under control, and they found a man in his 50s on the floor next to a bed, according to a Fire Department press release.
Firefighters removed the man through a window, and he was taken to a hospital for treatment.
The cause of the fire was careless smoking, the statement said. The house has been condemned because of heat and smoke damage.
