RALEIGH, N.C.
North Carolina lawmakers may repeal the state's required annual motor vehicle safety inspections.
The Senate Commerce Committee on Tuesday debated a measure its sponsor said would save owners more than $12 a year on each vehicle. Sen. Charlie Albertson of Duplin County said residents spend more than $80 million a year for inspections of tires, brakes, lights and other safety equipment.
Albertson said a report by the Legislature's Program Evaluation Division found no proof inspections improve road safety, and no increase in accidents after South Carolina and Nebraska repealed their inspection laws.
Representatives of the state Highway Patrol, Division of Motor Vehicles, AAA Carolinas, and repair-shop owners opposed ending the inspections.

Why??
Has there been a study or fact finding done by the State police to keep record of the inspection dates or vehicles involved in wrecks?? Don't think so! What is to say that a vehicle that passes the inspection today will not burn out a headlight the same day?? The police can still give ticket's for unsafe vehicles if they see them. With NC new no sticker rule in effect now there is a problem for everyone trying to figure out when they are do!. Not only that most shops do not want to do inspections because it cost them money. If you have a Mech. that you are charging $60. per hour for and it takes 20 min to do an inspection you are losing money at $12. Do away with them and nobody will ever notice.
I can't believe I'm saying this, but I disagree.
I think that the safety inspections should continue.
They are our last line of defense against the idiots on the road who hold their cars and trucks together with chewing gum and duck tape.
Who will drive around with one headlight or taillight out, and not replace it until the second one goes out.
Who will run on their bald tires until they blow one, and cross over into my lane on a country road at 70 mph.
Granted, most drivers, including myself, religiously maintain our vehicles. But, most laws are made to protect the law-abiding majority from the idiotic minority, aren't they? Are inspection laws that different?

"The repair shops actually oppose losing the opportunity to replace light bulbs at $10 each?"
You're so lazy or inept that you can't /won't change your own bulb but begrudge the man that charges you to do it? You're a Democrat/Socialist I'm sure. yes??
Perspective Indeed
It seems that some people must bring political ideology into every discussion, no matter what the subject or issue, and must do it through an unprovoked and virulent ad hominem attack.
Do What?
What about all the equipment the State and Shop owners invested in last year to "improve" the system? So much for that idea.
Bad Idea
This is flexible but I suggest something like newer cars less than four years old can go two years and older cars need to go every year.
Most people cannot even keep the tires inflated properly let alone maintain the vehicles.
you're kidding ... right?
The repair shops actually oppose losing the opportunity to replace light bulbs at $10 each?
