New admiral takes helm of U.S. Fleet Forces Command

Posted to: Military Norfolk

NORFOLK

Adm. Jonathan Greenert relinquished command of U.S. Fleet Forces Command to Adm. John C. Harvey Jr. in a ceremony this morning aboard the aircraft carrier Harry S. Truman at Norfolk Naval Station.

Greenert is heading to the Pentagon, where he is set to become vice chief of naval operations. He is replacing Adm. Patrick M. Walsh, who has been tapped to assume command of the Pacific Fleet.

Greenert, a 1975 U.S. Naval Academy graduate and former submarine officer, came to Fleet Forces in late September 2007. Previous assignments include commander of 7th Fleet and deputy commander of the Pacific Fleet.

Fleet Forces Command oversees the training and equipping of Navy air, surface and submarine forces worldwide. It is also responsible for the Military Sealift Command, as well as the Navy’s expeditionary combat, munitions and network warfare commands.
