Today’s grand re-opening of a McDonald’s on Bonney Road and Independence Boulevard attracted a crowd of about 20 PETA protesters who surrounded the new building until 1 p.m.
“We’re protesting McDonald's inhumane treatment of its chicken,” said campaigner Kate Brindle. “We want McDonalds to make its suppliers switch to CAK.”
CAK is short for controlled-atmosphere killing, which according to a PETA flier, is a more humane way of slaughtering chickens. It replaces the chickens’ oxygen with gases, putting them to sleep before they are killed.
McDonald’s is one the nation’s largest purchasers of chicken products, Brindle said.
The protest did not seem to deter the busy lunch crowd. With lines of people inside and a long line of cars in the drive-through, most people took advantage of the free double cheeseburger — one of many grand opening promotions.

Since when is it a bad thing
Since when is it a bad thing to care about animals?! Everyone commenting here seems very uneducated. At least those people where out there trying to make a difference and standing up for what they are passionate about. When is the last time any of you took time out to make a change in this world? Good for PETA for bringing awareness to the public.
To the one who said she would educate her children herself, have you done so? I doubt it, Im sure your children are still eating chicken from the supplier PETA is protesting.
PETA
Well...now peta is protesting, I'll go there for lunch! As usual, peta wants their CAK and eat it, too! (ohhhhh, what a horrible pun, but true)
Scare the children....GREAT Idea!
PETA needs to learn the proper place and time to do this. I was horrified my child had to witness those disgusting pictures. I will educate my child, not PETA, on how an animal is killed for the benefit of food. Why not discuss the volumes of animals PETA so calls "save" and then immediately euthanize.
CAK for poultry slaughtering?
I haven't previously heard of the process. It sounds like something that could adversely affect the meat. After all, anything that the bird inhales would reach the muscle/meat as quickly as it would reach the brain and other nervous system tissues.
It isn't the chicken's body that would find decapitation unpleasant, but the brain. Without an oxygen supply from the heart I don't see how any discomfort, pain or shock could last more than a few seconds. The birds are certainly not immortal and the BRIEF problems at slaughter would probably be less stressful than the illness and/or infirmity of advanced age.
While our origins are matters for another debate, if whatever/whoever created us has a problem with eating meat, there wouldn't be so many other carnivores and omnivores.
Why not sing the chickens a
Why not sing the chickens a lullaby while they are asleep? When a chicken looses it's head they can't feel and pain. No brain, no pain.
Yum.. Think I'll get a chicken sandwich.
I Hate McDonalds but.....Looks like I'll stop an Mickey D's Thursday and wave at PETA.
Sleepy Chickens
That is so sweet. Why not sing them lullabies before you behead them? PETA, don’t you have some flies to catch and release?
They'll get my business
I normally don't go to McDonald's, but if PETA is protesting the place, they'll get my business.
