Reports: Vick to be given conditional reinstatement to NFL

Posted to: Michael Vick Sports Virginia

From wire reports

The NFL commissioner has decided to give Michael Vick a conditional reinstatement that would allow the suspended quarterback to attend training camp, if he signs with a team, according to a report by ESPN.com.

Vick could also be suspended for the first four games of the 2009 season, a source told ESPN’s Sal Paolantonio and Chris Mortensen. Roger Goodell is expected to announce his decision early next week.

Two people familiar with the meeting confirmed the NFL commissioner, Vick, agent Joel Segal and two other members of the quarterback's team met Wednesday at a security firm in New Jersey. The two people requested anonymity because the league has not acknowledged the meeting.

NFL spokesman Greg Aiello declined to confirm the meeting when contacted Thursday.

"We're being consistent in not discussing any of the details while the review is taking place," Aiello said.

SI.com first reported the meeting at Buckley Petersen Global Inc. in Allendale.

Goodell said on Tuesday, a day after Vick was released from federal custody, that he hoped to make a decision "in the near future." He declined to define the timetable.

Goodell suspended Vick indefinitely in August 2007 after the former Atlanta Falcons quarterback admitted bankrolling the "Bad Newz Kennels" dogfighting operation. Goodell had said Vick would have to show remorse and signs that he had changed before he would consider reinstating him.

Vick's Virginia-based attorney, Lawrence Woodward, and Segal did not respond to messages left Thursday evening regarding the meeting with the commissioner.

Vick served most of his sentence at the federal penitentiary in Leavenworth, Kan., before being transferred to home confinement in late May. The electronic monitor he wore on his ankle in Hampton was removed Monday morning, freeing Vick from federal custody.

WELCOME back

If Vick wasn't reinstated I was gonna boycott the NFL. Get back in shape, join a good church, pray and stay on the straight and narrow path. Prove your naysayers wrong and stay out of trouble. CONTINUE to give back to your community and if you need help reach out for it!

When all is said----

The NFL and all professional sports need to re-set the bar. There are way too many players being allowed re-instatement after committing serious crimes. All Professional Sports need to set minimum acceptable standards and then enforce them no matter who is involved. As for Mikey, I hope the rumors are wrong.

Pro vs Regular Joe

Michael Vick will have to convince the public that he is no longer the person described in his criminal record and that he now regrets the decisions he made which brought him to this point in his life. The truly sad thing, if he was just a regular Joe, he could not land a job bagging groceries or work for Wal-Mart because of his past criminal record and the bankruptcies on his credit report.

New Vick?

Is the "New" Vick still lying about gambling on the dog fights?

No WAY!

If the REDSKINS sign him on...I and many other diehard REDSKIN fans will leave the fold...we do not want a DOG Killer on our team!! Are you hearing us Washington? If not, when you see a drop in attendance you'll understand why!

HaHa Speak for yourself, I'm

HaHa Speak for yourself, I'm a die-hard Redskins fan and I would love to have him on the team. I am a season ticket holder as well!

Think first before you post...

Yes, he did something very wrong and has paid for it. Now, he has an opportunity to make good on this second chance. Is there not anyone out there that would like to make good on a second chance??? Please.

Michael Vick

I have this feeling.....for some reason, because everyone is so against him that he is going to come back and play fantastic football. I just have that feeling.

National Felon League

Like the NFL has never had any other players who've had criminal records. Give me a break.

Wasn't there a Marcus somebody from Newport News who had trouble with guns, DUI, police chases and sexual assault? How about Plaxico Burress or Bruce Smith? That's without even leaving Hampton Roads!

Mike

In terms of Mike we are all being way to hard on him, consider ben roethlisberger who was recently accused in a civil suit of rape, and he is yet to be crucified in the same manner as Kobe was. Mike Vick is being attack for who he is as opposed to what he did..Imagine if it was Payton fighting these dogs...it might not even make local news.
