Chesapeake School Board re-elects leaders

CHESAPEAKE

Dr. Sheila G. Hill-Russ was re-elected chairwoman of the Chesapeake School Board in a unanimous vote Monday night. Harry Murphy was also re-elected vice chairman in a 6-3 decision.

"I look forward to working with the Chesapeake public schools for a second and final term," said Hill-Russ, who said her first year was a challenging one, particularly financially.

Last year, the School Board adopted a two-term limit for the chair and vice chair posts, so this will be the final term for both Murphy and Hill-Russ.

The board also announced Monday that although no teaching positions will be added for the 2009-10 school year, about 50 new teachers will be hired because of an unexpected number of retirees and resignations.

"All the new teachers will take the place of those who have left," board member Thomas Mercer said.

Most of the new teachers have been hired.

The School Board will have its next meeting Aug. 10.

Chesapeake...

doesn't have the smartest approach to building new schools, as the Grassfield situation showed. It was supposed to open in 2000, but years of wrangling and haggling postponed that forever it seemed. They also seem heck bent on each new shcool having a unique design, thus ensuring that the costs of the design alone is significant. Great Bridge, Hickory, and Oscar Smith are all designs that can be adopted for any new construction, mush like the Beach did back in the early 60s' to mid 70s' with their school designs. But that common sense approach seems to be a foreign one for this group to consider.

Term Limits for SB Chair and Vice Chair

Along with other adaptations and regulations borrowed from other school divisions by the VBCPS, this, too, should be added to the agenda.

It's good to see term limits invoked

All elected and appointed positions of public trust should have TERM LIMITS on them. This results in "CITIZEN POLITICIANS" the way our founding fathers meant our government to be. If term limits were invoked on every seat of public trust, we'd have by far less corruption and complacency eliminating much of the problems we have today. We should all be insisting on TERM LIMITS on every seat in local government and then insist on TERM LIMITS for state and federal government. As it is now, we have CAREER POLITICIANS in every level of government that monopolize seats of public trust and put their self interest above that of the citizens. It's past time to stop the Strom Thurmond's, Ted Kennedy's and Harry Byrd's in our government. These people and those like them have lost touch with the common citizens and no longer can relate to the needs, desires or struggles of the common citizen. Let's stop voting in the same problems over and over again. CHANGE should begin by voting out every incumbent.
