International space station to be visible again today

Posted to: News

NORFOLK

The international space station will be visible again today, weather permitting. It will appear as a solid white light, brighter than most stars, moving steadily across the sky.

At 10:43 p.m. Monday night the station was visible for five minutes, passing from west to north-northeast fairly low on the horizon. Its maximum elevation was 31 degrees (90 degrees is straight overhead).

A better view was expected today, when the station would appear twice. At 5:07 a.m., it was visible for five minutes, nearly straight overhead, reaching a maximum elevation of 87 degrees and passing from northwest to southeast.

At 9:32 p.m. it will appear for six minutes, reaching 70 degrees elevation and moving from southwest to northeast.

NASA publishes a schedule of space station viewing opportunities at http://spaceflight.nasa.gov/realdata/sightings.

International space station transit

We viewed the transit of the international space station when and where you published it would be. We observed this awe-inspiring spectacle from the grounds of our local elementary school. The craft appeared as an extremely bright shining object moving rapidly; much faster than a jet moving at high altitude. I have seen the space shuttle land at Cape Kennedy years ago, but this vista was extraordinary in its own right. Thank you for publishing the pertinent information which allowed us to view this spectacular scene.

Just saw it too!

That was great! It came from the direction the paper said it would and the time. It was amazing the speed it was going. Flew right over top of me. I had to look straight up at it. Thanks for publishing the times and directions. Worth the wait!

Just Watched it Fly By

Not much to see but it's amazing to think about what was going on up there and how fast they are traveling. I think it's cool to be able to say I saw that tonight!

Just saw it.

That was cool!

doin' it again tonight!

Anyone with kids should make sure they get out and watch this. Make an event out of it to foster wonderment in the makings of mankind. I remember how cool it was to be out with my dad as a kid and simply look thru a cheap telescope at a full moon on a clear night. He made it magical for all of us. Now we have this to show our kids. Don't pass up the opportunity, and tell all your friends and neighbors.

Don't Miss It

Saw it last night as clear as could be. Very cool! Set your cellphone alarms tonight!

Awesome

I saw it this morning; it was awesome.

big stars

well, what is that in the about 3 am sky to the east by south east?

subtle but very cool

Seen it go by about the same times during this past Memorial Day weekend. It was surprisingly bright, in fact at first I thought it was a low flying airliner's landing gear light. It's an amazing feeling to watch it go by and marvel at the technology we have in only the last 100 years, and to wonder about the men who man it as it passes over maybe looking down not knowing who is looking up at a given moment. I suggest you take your kids or grand kids out, watch it from a good vantage point like you would fireworks, and talk about what a miracle of man's imagination it truly is.
