Top seed moves to quarterfinals of Women's Am

Posted to: Sports

No. 1 seed Whitney Neuhauser of Barboursville cruised into the quarterfinals of the VSGA Women's Amateur Championship on Wednesday, setting up an all-ACC quarterfinal match today at Danville Golf Club.

The rising senior at U.Va. routed Mimi Hoffman 6 and 5 and will face Hunter Ross, a rising sophomore at Wake Forest. Chesterfield's Lyberty Anderson, the youngest player in the field at age 13, registered a 4 and 3 victory over Whitney Rhodes of Staunton.

Both Hampton Roads contenders in the championship flight fell in Wednesday's second round of match play. Norfolk's Kristen Simpson, a State Am finalist a year ago, fell 2-up to Alexa Boucher of Orange. Kerry Johnson of Chesapeake dropped a 7-and-6 decision to Lauren Greenlief of Oakton.

After quarterfinal and semifinal matches today, the event finishes with an 18-hole championship final on Friday.

Track and field runner signs with NSU

Vincent Brown, a standout middle-distance runner from Peachtree City, Ga., has signed to run for Norfolk State.

Brown was the Georgia Class AAAA state champion in the 800 meters as a senior for McIntosh High, and NSU coach Kenneth Giles says Brown should make an immediate impact in that event for NSU.
