WVEC-TV Channel 13 this week suffered its third wave of layoffs in the past six months, its general manager said today.
Jim Berman, the president and general manager, declined to say how many jobs were cut, citing the policy of the station’s owner, Belo Corp. But Berman said that those affected lost their jobs Monday and that none was an on-air personality.
“We’ve had to make a number of reductions because of the economy; we’re no different from any other business,” Berman said.
“We, like any other business, will continue to operate in a way that is best suited to the economy,” Berman said. WVEC, an ABC affiliate, “is “looking forward to the economic turnaround to provide an opportunity not only to stabilize but to bring jobs back.”

News Director is a Failure
I love WVEC's but I can't support a news director that doesn't have a clue how to run the station. Letting the areas top news team drop in rankings then laying off the core of his station is dumb.
No wonder WAVY10 is moving up in the sweeps ratings. Maybe one day the will get a clue but with the current news dirctor, they don't have a prayer... I've switched to channel 10 news and only hope channel 13 leaders figure out why they are dropping like a rock.
God Forbid
God Forbid they should have to axe an onair personality... they work so hard combing their hair and pretending to smile
Nothing New
There is nothing new here. WVEC did the same thing to Dr. Duane
Harding many years ago. Many in the area were shocked at his "firing". We still miss his reporting. He was the best.
Unprofessional dismissals
Having been intimately familiar with many of the people who have been "let go", the process started last year. The way the process works is there is no notice of the dismissal, they are called in to their manager's office given a cry job then ESCORTED out of the building as if a common criminal. If one were to look at the ages of those let go, they would see most were over the age of 40 or considered overweight. (Other really good people have left because of the atrocities being done by the "miss" management of the station.) Their last judgmental release was done 2 days before the end of the month meaning as of July 1 they had NO insurance. A very good friend was let go during this last round after having been there for 25 years (thanks for your loyal service!) It's no wonder the station over the last 3 rating periods has seen their ratings TANK. The most important asset an organization has is their people, WVEC no longer has a concept of how to treat people fairly and with compassion as it did prior to 2006. There was an article not long ago about a PBS station somewhere in the mid-west that had to release 25% of their staff. They were found comparable jobs before their release. W
In-The-Trenches
When lay-offs accure it's always the people working in-the-trenches who get the ax. News videographers, reporters, engineers, traffic and general office staff are axed. But, the higher-ups seem to always keep their positions and large salaries with bonuses. In a station on the East Coast the General Manager was paid a bonus to operate the station with a lower number of employees. Yes, the economy is hitting everyone with the exception of the Upper Managers of these DTV station.
WVEC / WTAR Dismissals
None of my bees-wax, of course, but would someone list the recent victims of downsizing at the stations? As a former broadcaster now living in Gooberville, Jaw-Guh, I know the old cliche: "You don't move up, you move out."
Economy gets bad, businesses
Economy gets bad, businesses tighten their belts and cut back on advertising, and media outlets suffer. There's probably already been attrition in the sales department, just because for most of those folks, if you're not selling ads, you're making basically minimum wage.
I do wonder if, however, some of this is a situation like WAVY where they're moving master control to corporate. One of those situations where technology reduces the need for people. When I worked in TV over ten years ago, we were working on doing that.
what a shame
Channel 3 is laying off too...what a shame. I pray for the families that suffer from this.
Wrong
Channel 3 has had no layoffs. The only of the big network affiliates here to do so. Thank you.
It's no wonder Jeff Lawson
It's no wonder Jeff Lawson wants to come back to work in a few days from major surgery after his bike accident, he is concerned about his job.
Whew!
Sure glad the FOUR weather people are still on the payroll. Two sports reporters. Four weather reporters. Go figure.
They could centralize it and
They could centralize it and do it all with a computer. We'd have Max Headroom giving us the news and weather (to the people that don't get that information from the internets).
Time to re-invent themselves. The local TV stations should figure out new things to do that no one else is doing. Ways to get viewers. Time to be creative.
SAD
Wow, not good...
