Deeds shifts campaign gears, changes tone

Posted to: Elections News

RICHMOND

Lagging in polls and facing criticism from some Democrats about his strategy, Creigh Deeds is trying to refocus his campaign with just over two months until Election Day.

The effort began Friday with what his campaign called a "major address" - a 21-minute speech repeating themes he's discussed throughout the race: education, transportation and economic development.

Tone is what made this delivery different.

Deeds strove to connect with voters by weaving anecdotes about his humble country upbringing into the narrative.

"I grew up on a farm and my family didn't have much," he told an audience at George Mason University in Fairfax. "I knew poor, but I was fortunate enough not to know hunger."

Deeds cited a teenage job at a summer camp for disadvantaged children as a pivotal moment in shaping his outlook:

"At lunch, this little 9-year-old boy looked up at me and asked, 'You mean we eat more than once a day here?' "

"That opened my eyes, and my heart," Deeds added. "I realized in that moment that the world wasn't perfect, that right here in Virginia there were people who were hurting and kids who went to bed hungry."

Deeds also sought to contrast his message with that of Bob McDonnell, his Republican opponent, who he repeatedly jabbed but never mentioned by name.

"I want a Virginia where progress, respect and equality prevail, not one separated by politicians with narrow social agendas," he said. "We can't move forward when we are led by those who make division and personal crusades the priority over common good."

Predictably, the McDonnell campaign and GOP groups labeled Deeds' effort a failure.

"That was the most backwards-looking speech ever given by a Virginia gubernatorial nominee," McDonnell spokesman Tucker Martin said in a statement. "If Creigh Deeds thinks blowing the dust off an old political playbook amounts to a major new announcement, he doesn't get what the voters of Virginia are looking for in their next governor."

University of Virginia political science professor Larry Sabato gave the speech a passing grade, but no high marks.

"It's fine as far as it goes," he said. "He's obviously going to try to continue to paint McDonnell into a right wing, conservative corner. And he tried to broaden the pitch to Democrats of all stripes. He was trying to connect with people who don't know him."

The real challenge for Deeds, Sabato added, is national political headwinds that seem to be blowing against Democrats.

Deeds campaign officials proclaimed the speech a success during an afternoon conference call with reporters.

"Creigh today effectively said to Virginians, 'Here's what's at stake,' " said Mo Elleithee, a senior adviser to Deeds. "Despite all this noise and all this discussion in the media about whatever the national environment may be, there is a lot at stake here in Virginia. And you could not have two more different candidates on these issues."

Also Friday, Deeds' campaign announced that its first television commercial of the general election is airing across the state. The spot focuses on Deeds' economic vision, touches on tax credits for job creation and implicitly links McDonnell to the fiscal policies of former President George W. Bush.

NO MORE BOB's - KEEP CBN OUT

I for one am tired of military officers rolling over into politics. They were slackers when they were in the military and they will continue that proud tradition of doing little or nothing. Bob McDonald is a former military officer. Terry McAuliffe should have been elected but the lazy axx Democrats put Deeds on the ticket. McAuliffe could easily have won against McDonald. He is way smarter and god know we could use a boost to Virginia's IQ. McDonald is probably one of the original 700 Club member on Pat Robertson's religious right mega-network. Do we really need another religious right-wing Nixon/Reagan/Bush/Dubyah hypocrite sitting in the governor's mansion. His kids almost went to the same high school as my daughter. Thank god they bailed out of the IB program before they flunked out. McDonald would have been hovering over Princess Anne High School preaching and teaching there too. Enough. Vote for Deeds and keep the conservatives down!

Deeds direction?

Sure Mr. Deeds try using the anti Bush direction, It worked for a while however what can you use for an excuse for your parties failures now?
Mark Warner is a sad role model, He also manipulated and shifted to make himself look good and only to put him in a higher office. 'got him where he wanted to go. but did little for Virginians!

MAYBE YOU WERE ASLEEP FROM 2000 TO 2008

How dare you blame our current economic situation on Democrats. Under a Democratic president we are finally getting the country into the twenty-first century.

George W. Bu$h and his crew led us into another Viet Nam. Where are the weapons of mass destruction (WMD's)? Dubya sold the Iraq War to the American people and our elected officials under false pretenses. One can only hope that the Justice Department goes after Dick Cheney, Rumsfeld, and others for disseminating false intelligence reports.

The puppets of Dubya and Dick Cheney who authorized violations of due process of law, the Cuban detainee hotel, and waterboarding will be disbarred.

Yeah, we still blame Republicans for the MESS we're in and for those who are still in denial!

The Blame Game.....

Have you noticed that MOST of the Deomcrats that continue to use the "Bush Card" and blame him for EVERYTHING....are the same ones who "voted YES" for the past 8 yrs. on almost everything that they are now complaining about?

Check out Obama's voting record as he continues to blame the previous administration for all of our problems! OUR elected Congress & Senate should take a lot of the blame!

And we already KNEW what to expect after Timmy reduced his status as Governor of Virginia to a "part-time job"........second to his Important Democratic Chairman position!

I'VE NOTICED THAT AMERICA IS BETTER OFF WITH OBAMA

Your party is crushed and you are still fighting. Good for you. We will call you out when you lie. I love those words in President Obama's speech before the Joint Session on September 9, 2010.

Dubya's (George W. Bush) mistakes are not Monica-gate or the “Chappaquiddick incident” death of Mary Jo Kopechne. Those errors of judgement were terrible in themselves but you Republicans take the cake. You can bring down America and the entire World economic system!

You Pubs only believe what you want to believe so there is little reason to argue with you. Most Americans do not believe you anyway.

It Doesn't matter

Creigh & Bob are the same. Both are beholden to special interests.

Office holders in both parties will never realize it until it's to late.

Same corporate masters. Both parties. Sad...and dangerous.

"The old parties are husks, with no real soul within either, divided on artificial lines, boss-ridden and privilege-controlled, each a jumble of incongruous elements, and neither daring to speak out wisely and fearlessly on what should be said on the vital issues of the day." – Theodore Roosevelt

Sadly.....

.....I think you are correct. I have had both sides call me numerous times and when I tell them how to get my vote, I can listen and tell it falls on deaf ears. Politics.....they want your vote but don't listen to anything but the $$$.

"shifts gears?"

Funny. When it's a Democrat, the media calls it "shifts gears" and "changes tone."

Just sounds like "going negative" to me.

MCDONALD'S MASTER'S THESIS

How can ignore the master's thesis written by a a 34-year-old man at Regent's University? I have not read McDonald's thesis but he would not have received a passing grade twenty years ago unless it adhered to the divine guidance of Pat Robertson and his crew of 700.

Beware what you write. It just may come back to haunt you. McDonald true beliefs are in writing. You tried to foist Palin on us in 2008 and now you want us to vote for McDonald. Leave it to the Pubs to TRY and sell us another fake. Will the REAL Bob McDonald please stand up?

Very True

"If Creigh Deeds thinks blowing the dust off an old political playbook amounts to a major new announcement, he doesn't get what the voters of Virginia are looking for in their next governor."

Exactly!
