CURRITUCK COUNTY

A Currituck County man was killed Sunday when the car he was driving drifted into an oncoming car on U.S. 158 near the intersection of Trenor Lane.

At 6:45 p.m., Anthony Candela, 31, of Harbinger, died at the scene after the 1993 Ford Escort he was driving south on U.S. 158 struck head-on a 2003 Toyota Corolla heading north driven by Rebecca Coore, 37, of Virginia Beach, said Sgt. Jeff Wilson of the North Carolina State Highway Patrol.

Coore is listed in critical condition at Sentara Norfolk General Hospital, said hospital spokeswoman Gloria Seitz. Coore was wearing seat belts and the airbags deployed, Wilson said.

Candela also was wearing a seat belt, but he did not have airbags. No alcohol was involved, Wilson said, but a toxicology screen will be conducted for prescription or illegal drugs.

Candela lived less than a mile from the accident. He had recently moved to Currituck County from Michigan.
