High School Football 2009 | Preseason poll

The Virginian-Pilot's preseason South Hampton Roads high school football poll, as voted upon by staffers Jami Frankenberry, Larry Rubama, Rainer Sabin, Darrell Cuenca, Mike Keech, Lee Tolliver and John Streit (first-place votes in parentheses):

1. Oscar Smith (7) 15-0 70 After winning the program's first state championship, the Tigers and star QB Phillip Sims are runaway favorites in the Southeastern District and Eastern Region.

2. Ocean Lakes 11-1 60 The Dolphins were unbeaten in the Beach District in coach Chris Scott's debut season.

3. Lake Taylor 12-1 58 The Titans, after snapping a 6-year playoff losing streak, are hungry for more.

4. Green Run 10-2 50 Are the Stallions and 1,000-yard rusher Dejor Simmons ready to avoid another second-place finish in the Beach?

5. Grassfield 7-4 39 The Grizzlies made postseason in the program's second season.

6. Kellam 8-4 27 Can coach Chris DeWitt - in his 11th season - find a running back to replace area leader James Taylor?

7. Cox 7-4 26 The Falcons last season made their first playoff appearance since the school opened in 1961.

8. Norcom 7-3 23 The Greyhounds welcome back 3-year starter DeAndre Lamb at quarterback.

9. Western Branch 8-3 13 The Bruins are aiming higher after a going one-and-done in the playoffs last season.

10. King's Fork 4-6 6 The Bulldogs were in the Division 5 playoff hunt until late last season. Could this be a breakthrough year in Suffolk?
