Hokies Camp 2009, Volume 11 (kicker edition) ...

Sorry, folks, but the actual practice reports are going to be much thinner from here on out. The rest of the season, we’re limited to the first two practice periods on Tuesday. Everything else is closed to us hacks.

BUT ... I was able to grab Tech’s trainer for an injury update ... then scribbled some notes on the part of the kicking competition that I was able to see.

First, the latest on bumps and bruises from Mike Goforth:

ON INJURED RB DARREN EVANS: “He’s out here full today. This is his first full day. It was a capsular sprain: The capsule around the knee, the soft tissue around the knee. He sprained the back side of it.”

ON THAT ACCOUNTING FOR THE POPPING EVANS SAID HE HEARD: “Yeah, well, you can pop your knee standing up out of a car. It wasn’t anything ligamentus.”

ON IT SEEMING WORSE WHEN THE INJURY FIRST HAPPENED: “Very much so. That’s why we had two doctors get here as soon as they could to look at it.”

ON WHETHER THERE ARE ANY OTHER INJURIES: “The only one that really concerns me is Cam Martin. It’s the same surgical knee still bothering him. That’s a little bit of a concern. So we’re going to shut him down for a couple days. He had a PCL reconstructed (after last season).”

ON WHAT THE PROBLEM IS: “He irritated it again the other day. It’s literally a day-to-day thing. We’re giving him two days off, a series of Synvisc shots. We’re just going to let it calm down and go from there. (The shot) is an artificial cartilage that’s supposed to help lubricate the knee.”

ON NOT BEING WORRIED ABOUT LG SERGIO RENDER’S BACK: “Nope. He’s been full for a few days now.”

ON LORENZO WILLIAMS BEING IN BLUE: “He’s got a hamstring. He missed yesterday and the day before, too. We’re hoping to get him back full (tomorrow).”

*** That’s it for injuries. CB Eddie Whitley has been practicing behind Kam Chancellor at FS while Williams has been out. Bud Foster told me today that he loves Whitley’s “football IQ” and that the sophomore can help the team at free safety or either corner spot. He’s currently tied for second at field corner with Cris Hill and is the No. 2 at boundary behind Stephan Virgil.

Now, to the kickers. Keep in mind, this is unofficial (I couldn’t see for certain whether every kick went through) and is only part of what the kickers did today. But I figured since this is a MAJOR uncertainty on a 2009 team without a lot of major questions, I’d pay attention for a few minutes this afternoon.

Here’s what I (think) I saw, which included one guy shining who I'd never even really heard coach Frank Beamer talk about  ...
