NORFOLK
Marcus Vick was sentenced Thursday to 20 days in jail for violating his probation stemming from an October drunken driving conviction, but he was released on bond pending his appeal.
Vick, the younger brother of NFL player Michael Vick and a former football player himself, was found guilty in October of DUI, eluding police and a traffic infraction. Police said Vick fled from a bicycle officer downtown in June 2008 and failed a sobriety test when he was caught.
Vick got a 12-month suspended jail term on condition that he pay fines and complete the Virginia Alcohol Safety Action Program and stay away from drugs and alcohol.
Vick never completed the program. Prosecutor Richard Farley said Vick missed several appointments with counselors and for drug screens and tested positive for marijuana at one drug screen he attended.
In General District Court on Thursday, when a judge asked what an immediate drug screen would show, Vick said, "Positive."
Vick had failed to pay court fines and fees until Thursday morning. He still has not paid the fee for the alcohol program. Vick said that was because he was unable to get a job until April, when he landed one at a shipyard. Farley noted that Vick had money to buy marijuana.
Vick told the judge he was due in Florida on Saturday to try out for a new football league. Like his brother, Vick played for Virginia Tech. He was dropped by the team in 2006 after a series of problems on the field and elsewhere. He was released by the Miami Dolphins in 2007.
Vick's lawyer, Charles Lustig, asked Judge James S. Mathews to give Vick another chance to follow the court's orders.
Mathews told Vick to remember his hearing in October.
"Your lawyer said 'He wants to be treated like anybody else,' " Mathews said. "That's exactly what's going to happen."
Vick was taken into custody after the hearing, but he later posted $25,000 bond and was released.

What Is A Thug?
love4va wants to know the definition of a thug. It's a guy who has no respect for the law or others. One who can't stay out of trouble. One who is arrogant and defiant. One who blames others instead of themselves. One who lies about being involved in a criminal act then confesses when we all know he did it. One who parties and sleeps with underage girls. One who stomps a down football player because they tackled him. One who gets booted off a college football team because he can't behave. One who runs from police. One who fights dogs and kills the loser. Sound like anybody you know. And that's only what they have been caught doing. As for Michael Phelps, the article wasn't about him. Maybe that's why there were no Phelps comments. The trouble with athletes today is they don't care about the example they set for young fans. In fact the sports page reports more crimes than the rest of the paper. As for love for Vick I can assure you my comments were not for that distorted purpose.
Thanks for your reply. I
Thanks for your reply. I agree a "thug" is a person who has no respect for the law and others. Sounds like everyday people from all social backgrounds(including athletes, entertainers etc) THAT DON'T MAKE THE NEWS. The person who speeds to work or drinks and drives who may or maynot harm someone. A "thug" a person who is arrogant. Sounds like people in corporations who are stealing money from millions of people. A "thug" a person involved in a criminal acts then confesses when we all know they did it. Sounds like government official from all parties. A person who gets kicked off a college football team and campus because of inapprpriate behavior. Sounds like students from the majority of all local and national colleges(even Ivy league schools) A "thug" one who parties and sleeps with underage girls and uses drug. Sounds like people in Hollywood who are not acting but doing this in their everyday life. A person who runs from police. Sounds like this guy yesterday in CT who stoled a boat he knew someone had already brought but he wanted and sent the police on a high speed chase.(he could have killed himself and others) One who fights dogs sounds like a group in Talbot County, Ga who
Shame on you!!!!!
I can tell you people are not christains. What ever happened to forgiveness and giving people a second chance.I really think both have learned a big leason. I know Marcus Vick has changed a lot he goes to church every Sunday. He now has a beautiful 3 month old baby girl and is planning to Merry soon. I beleive in forgiveness and second chances because that's what the lord would do. Now you think real hard about that.
dollars to donuts
Dollars to donuts we have not hear the last of the trouble the Vick boys will get into.
Pathetic
I am actually surprised that Vick hasn't done something more serious. But I know that is coming. Like his brother he has no class and no ethics. As the news has swamped us with the "i'm sorry" Michael Vick quotes I began to believe he may have changed. Then he stuck his foot in his mouth saying he started dog fighting because a Newport News police officer saw a dog fight and did nothing. Making Michael feel it was okay. And this guy completed college??? These guys can't even lie good but groups like PETA turn around and embrace their BS. My only wish is that pro sports had a code of ethics instead of pretending it does with all the warnings and second chances. But until the public stops supporting these thugs, we'll be forced to see them on our TVs. As for Marcus, I am convinced his future will consist of a wardrobe of an orange jumpsuit rather than a sports jersey.
i love that no one cares for
i love that no one cares for michael vick but take time out of their not so busy schedule to comment on him and give him so much energy...If i didn't care about someone or like what they did believe me i would not go to a site about them or waste my time commenting. so in a way thanks for all the love..Also everyone is worried about mv and his brother but Michael Phelps mother did her best raising him and he still decided to smoke weed(MARIJUANA, DRUGS) and he got a DUI. Did that not make anyones paper. Define a thug for me.........
One Vick, Two Vick
It's getting to the point where a Vick family member in trouble with the law isn't news anymore.
How long will it be before older brother Michael needs to use another "second chance"?
I agree with the Judge, lock him up-I'm only sorry that he got out to re-offend again-and with this bunch, that won't take long.
Sorry
These athletes are poor excuses that do not need to be idolized. It is society's fault that we excuse their behavior like a slap on the wrist. Younger bro Vick seriously has some growing up to do; and it's going to take something tragic to happen to him before he finally gets it, hopefully not to late.
Apples don't fall far from the tree...
Yup...they're all apples from the same tree (whatever tree that was)...expect M Vick to have problems again just like his younger sibling, but first they have to sign him up back into the NFL...WHAT A JOKE? I won't be one of those stupids fans who support him. Remember, he's just sorry that he got caught!
Again....
....you can the Vicks out of the Ghetto, but you can't take the Ghetto out of the Vicks......
Shocking! I would never have
Shocking! I would never have guessed a member of such a fine family would be jailed! Put in prison maybe but not jailed!
The public is to blame
As alot of athletes grow up they learn that hey, I can get away with anything as long as I can play a sport. How many high schools forgive grades, behavior, crimes as long as they can help win the game. How many college football and bastketball players graduate? When we see high schoolers and college players going pro afre we not teaching them nothing matters except winning, going pro and making millions. You people support this by caring more about sports and athletes than for things that really matter, like an good education for all our kids, our neighborhoods, our country. Show me a professional football or basketball player who will cure cancer. A few have gone on to politics and might help pass legislation that will help cure cancer but what percentage is that .01%. The next time a high school player commits a crime and you think it's ok so long as they get to play. You are teaching them to act this way.
NOT THE PUBLIC...PARENTS!
I agree that the public tends to over-idolize athletes, but when parents push their kids to excel in sports for the express purpose of "giving something back" to mom and dad, we get the character quality of the Vick brothers. The raw talent of the Vicks, the Uptons, the Wrights and other local athletes has been developed through much hard work, dedication and parental involvement. The character of these athletes does not rise from their acceptance by the public, it comes from their home and family. That's why some athletes can be heroes, and others should be convicts.
If any sports franchise would now hire Marcus Vick, I think the franchise should be severely boycotted!
as I've said before
Life's lessons's begin at home and apparently the Vick parents didn't teach their boys very much at all.
When I heard Michael Vick on 60 Minutes throwing the balme on the Newport News Police Dept for his dog fighting. I realized then we were not dealing with a full deck.
It's not only education and parenting..
It also had to do with poverty leaving people to do what allows them to survive. Whether it's selling drugs to make sure kid has food on table or maintaining a lavish lifestyle. It's human nature. I do agree though they are over-idolized and given life lines while criminal charges face them due to being "Famous Athletes."
I'm still outraged Micheal Vick payed 1% ($1,500) of the possible MAX $150,000 fine for his charge. We all know our government spent more than $1.5K to investigate and prosecute him. Why can't the gov. charge percentages of total wealth as opposed to set values. I bet ya it would help end white collar crime. ;)
Do you really think that
Do you really think that taking those dogs and reabilitating them is right ? If it was some Joe Blow they would have but those dogs down and you know that, but no Mike had to pay a million dollar to reabiliatate a dog I would never trust around my kids or myself. He does deeply regret every thing he has done. Some times people do stupid thing and regret them. I myself have had poor judgements and regreted it. Life is nothing but a bunch of learning lessons.
There are police officers that are not as honest as others. We are not perfect. God Be With You.
I don't get IT!!!
He would have tested positive for a drug screen, but was to stay away from drugs and alcohol and didn't complete the drug program. Hummm! Wouldn't you think he would get the full jail term for disrespecting judge's sentence terms.
Something in the water only effects certain individuals
Michael Vick, Plaxico Burress, Marcus Vick & Bruce Smith. Is it something in the water that only effects local football players? Thank goodness we have a great pool of local young professional baseball players that seem to have their heads on straight.
Great representation of Hampton Roads area 'eh?
Ahhh, this is GREAT representation of Hampton Roads area. Jesse Jackson pushes Michael Vick to get back in football because "quarterbacking is what he does" but....here's what gets me. STUPIDITY AND being a FELON can get your job back to earn MILLIONS? I know people that do MUCH LESS offenses (if any), get fired and they CAN'T get their job back. What's wrong with this picture. THUGGERY in Hampton Roads...if you can play a professional sport, throw millions on the table (and expensive lawyers)...you get off or get no punishment because it's about the all mighty $$$$. ZERO TOLERANCE you idiots...you do the crime, do the time and be LUCKY if you can earn more than $10/hr. Vick, you're still a bumbling idiot...you've clearly shown that. Apple don't fall too far from the tree. My..wouldn't momma/daddy(?) be proud for raising such fine...(thugs)!
My My
Forgiveness is devine!!!!
