Diary of a Madwoman

Think your life is bad? Meet Diary of a Madwoman. With each post come words of wisdom on parenting teenagers, special needs, marriage and life in general. You're not always going to agree with her, but at least you can take comfort in knowing that she speaks from the heart, always dishing out the truth.

My Friend J. is a Jellyfish

I was watching 'Bridget Jones - The Edge of Reason' when I found out that one of my toxic friends is a jellyfish.

At first, I didn't know what the characters meant when they said, "here comes the jellyfish."  Once said friend opened her mouth, I understood completely.

My so-called friend J is a jellyfish.  J likes to make jabs (stings) at those around her, with things like:

"I see you did something with your hair."

"Only you can get away with orange shoes, a blue shirt and purple pants."

"Oh, I see you settled for a mini-van."

"Well, private school isn't for everyone."

It's those little jabs that make you want to tackle her to the ground, shove dirt in her mouth, then blurt out all of her dirty little secrets.  And believe me, I have thought about it.  If her soon to be ex husband knew what I know.  Well, let's just say that she'd be penniless, homeless and childless.

But, as you can see, the human in me kicks in and I, instead of hating her, feel sorry for her and just smile (like Bridget Jones did) and walk away calmly.

Yet, the more I think about it, the more I'm pretty sure that come fall, I won't be on her side anymore.  After all, those jellyfish stings hurt.  And you can only take so much stinging.

Do you have any toxic or jellyfish friends?  If so, please share.  I hate to think that I'm the only one.

I used to...

but as I got older, I started phasing them out.

Also, it helps that my last "best friend" slept with my now ex-husband. After that, I pretty much decided that anyone who didn't respect my boundaries, I didn't need to be around.

Honestly, I suggest stop calling her and start cutting any conversations she makes very short.

And when she says something toxic, say "why would you so that?" When she acts surprised (and she will) say "it really bothers me when you say things like that, maybe you don't realize how demeaning, nagging, derogatory (whichever) it is, but I don't like it. Stop."

Then walk away.
