Police stopping commercial vehicles today on I-264 in Va. Beach

Posted to: News Transportation and Traffic Virginia Beach

Commercial truck drivers will be stopped by police this morning in the eastbound lanes of Interstate 264 at the old toll plaza near Rosemont Road, according to the Virginia Beach Police Department.

Officers who specialize in commercial vehicle inspections will be checking driver’s qualifications, log books and hauling permits from 8 a.m. to noon, a news release says. They also will check to see if vehicles are overweight.

The enforcement event is being hosted by the department’s Motor Carrier Safety Unit, the release says. Officers from similar units in Newport News, Norfolk, Portsmouth, Chesapeake and Virginia State Police will participate. The Department of Motor Vehicles also will participate.

The officers and other participants belong to a committee of Drive Safe Hampton Roads, a regional safety coalition.

Jurisdiction

Who wrote/issued tickets. VB Police do not have jurisdition on I-64 or I-264. What authority did they have to pull folks over (and they did)

The Virginia Department of Transportation/Department of Motor Vehicles has jurisdiction only on those roads maintained by the Virginia Department of Transportation. The City of Virginia Beach has jurisdiction on all streets within the city, except for Interstate 64 and Interstate 264.

Mike

VB police do have jurisdiction on the part of I-264 that falls within city limits. Who told you otherwise? Thats like saying in York County or any other county with in the state where VDOT maintains all roads, including neighborhood roads, that the local police cant enforce traffic code because the road is not maintain by the locality.

One more step towards

"PAPERS PLEASE"

Don't announce ....

VDOT shouldn't announce that they are doing this. Just set up and start pulling the trucks. This way they could get a truer picture of who is and who is not complying with proper procedures, etc.

Safety?

Somehow, I think this is less about safety, and more about fund-raising.

Yup - You're Right

It's a revenue sharing program btwn VB & VDOT. They split the fines to pay for either a dog house or a broken pipe.

Not true

The city/town/county where the violation goes to court in keeps 100% of the fines collected. VDOT does not get any such funding. Thats why towns like Emporia have such agressive speed enforcement on the 58 bypass.

Old toll plaza

The old toll plaza is near Rosemont Road.

Thanks for pointing that out!

Where Was The Old Toll Plaza?

Can you please be more specific? Not all of us grew up here or were in town when the toll plaza was active. I'd guess you mean the pull-off lane between Independence and Rosemont?

Yep

That's the one. So Pilot is telling us to get off at Independence North bound (Pembrook exit), take a right on Bonnie, take a right on Rosemont and get right back on the interstate to avoid it. Thanks Pilot.
