SUFFOLK

A small plane carrying three people came down on a rural roadway near the North Carolina line just before 5 p.m. Monday.

Pilot James William Beauchamp, 68, was flown from the crash scene to Sentara Norfolk General Hospital, city spokeswoman Debbie George said. Beauchamp's injuries were not thought to be serious, she said.

The Mooney M20F single propeller plane took off from the Suffolk Municipal Airport a few minutes before the crash and experienced engine trouble, George said.

Beauchamp, who is from Corapeake, N.C., was taking his nephew and a friend to see his property on Desert Road, George said.

When the four-passenger plane had problems, Beauchamp tried to take it down on a rural roadway near the North Carolina line.

Trees along the side of Deer Forest Road ripped off part of the right wing of the plane. It landed in the 4400 block of Deer Forest, with the damaged wing in the road and the left wing in the woods.

The two passengers were not hurt, George said.

The crash is being investigated by the Virginia State Police.

Confusing story

'A small plane duster'? Never heard of that type. And yet an earlier report about the plane being a crop duster was incorrect? With three people being in the plane, it is doubtful it could have been a crop duster. Reporters need to get things right before posting or else the editor needs to do a better job of checking on things.

Huh???

markk33831 .... Where are you reading all of that?

I've known Beau for years; since he was an A&P instructor at Hampton Roads Airport. He's also worked on many of the aircraft I've flown as well. Practically everyone in the aviation industry in the southeast coast knows him. He's a real stand up guy and I wish him all the best for a quick recovery!!
