The Landstown High School football team got a surprise visitor Monday on the first day of practice: former NFL quarterback Michael Vick.
Landstown coach Tommy Reamon coached Vick at Warwick High School in Newport News.
Vick, who recently ended a 23-month sentence for a dogfighting conviction, didn't discuss his pursuit of a spot with an NFL team, his suspension from the league or his time in jail.
His visit lasted nearly two hours and included participating in passing drills with Landstown's receivers.
"I love working with kids and putting smiles on their faces and being able to help them in whatever capacity that I can," Vick said. "I've been through a lot of experiences in my life and they know it. And for the most part I can help them."
Since his release, Vick has been tutoring Landstown quarterback Larry Joshua. Reamon called Joshua his "next Division I quarterback."
"He's been working real hard this spring and I've told others that this kid will be the real deal," said Reamon, who has coached seven Division I quarterbacks.
Vick also was impressed.
"He's got unbelievable arm strength," said Vick, dressed in a blue windbreaker and shorts. "I just think he needs to learn to control it because that's one of the problems I had when I was young. But he's a smart kid."
Joshua, a 6-foot-1 junior, said Vick has taught him a lot in a short time.
"When coach told me Michael Vick was going to work with me, I was so excited," he said. "He's taught me how to get my arm up, how I need to step when I throw, how to throw the ball in the right spot and worked with me on my footwork.
"He's somebody I can trust since he's been in the league and he's someone who knows coach Reamon."
Reamon, now in his second season at Landstown, has been one of Vick's biggest supporters and visited him in prison. He said he got the idea to invite Vick to practice because it was a chance for his players to hear from a "real-life football player."
"He talked to them about mistakes and doing right," Reamon said. "I talk about it all the time but he represented my message as good as I could even ask for. He helps me sell the message."
Vick showed up when most players were returning from a break. He watched and cheered the players as they went through various running and stretching drills. Then he gathered the team for a 15-minute talk.
Following the talk, Vick and Reamon's son Tommy Jr., a freshman quarterback at Old Dominion, lined up and went through various passing drills with Landstown's receivers. Some were surprised by Vick's delivery since he's been away from the game for awhile.
"He threw a pretty hard ball," said junior Ronald Henderson. "I knew I had to focus on it and keep my eyes on the ball. But it was a great experience and it was really good to see him."
Those drills lasted for nearly 30 minutes before the players broke up for more drills.
Afterward, Vick talked about his message to the team.
"Coach asked me to say a couple of words to them and I told them that they will never be able to relive this again," Vick said. "Football is just a game. It's a game of just going out there and having fun, having camaraderie with your teammates and being accountable to one another. That's what it's all about. That's what makes it the game that it is today."

I'm all for the pretending
I'm all for the pretending to rehab his image and glad he is trying to put his life back on track. Regardless, he is still a convicted felon and working with high school kids should not be an option this soon after his release. It was reported that the coach that invited Vick out to practice did coach him in high school. Not every coach is able to bring a former nfl player to practice, but a line should be drawn along the lines of, I don't know, maybe inviting a felon. Hopefully some of the kids parents speak up about this.

Felons
There are felons every where. Even in the public school system. There are juveniles who are convicted felons in the public school system right now. Virginia Beach may not want you to know that, but there are. Also, when you go to McDonald's or Burger King, some of them are making your burgers. So get off your high horse!! Even when you go to the restaurant, such as; Ruth's Chris Steak House in VA Beach. They get out of prison and they have to work. Just like you or me. When your child get's his or her first job. Some of them start at their local McDonald's. Just because Donte Stallworth admitted to killing someone. He killed a human being, due to his being drunk. They did not deserve to die and I think that a life should be worth more than 30 days. Maybe if it where your loved one and your dog in that car you may feel differently. Because, it seems that you need a dog in the car to be worth something to the judicial system.
Are you in need of a 2nd chance?
No, just ask the cop who stopped Bruce Smith to come and talk to the kids. He has a DUI also. And, what about all the people who Drink and Drive? Do they deserve a second chance? Funny, In this world if you have the money to pay for a decent lawyer you just might get 30 days for Vehicular Manslaughter. Which involves human beings. But if you kill dogs you get 2 years and people stalking, demeaning, and even wanting to kill you. GOD gave humans dominion over all things!! We come first, and we need to stop and take a good look at some of the decisions that are being made. Vick, did something bad, but does he deserve all the hate? When we allow these other things to go on day in and day out. I don't think so. Even PETA's own people got off better than he and they dumped dead animals in a dumpster. But, they don't want to talk about their own problems. Because no one is without.
No Right to Judge
What right do we have to judge? Doesnt God have the last say so? Micheal paid his debt to society. This situation is out of our hands and its is between God and Micheal. Now as far as I know, Micheal has been granted a 2nd chance and now he is now in Peace. Let this man have his peace and lets move on. What about our children in the streets getting killed everyday? What about society introducing Sex, Violence and other corruptions to our kids while we (Americans) are allowing this to happen. I bet half of you (haters) have done worse and sinned more than Micheal Vick had done, but do you have half of the nation judging you? Remember while you point your finger at Micheal, there are 3 fingers pointing back at you. Shame on you. Lets use our time and energy getting love and the old school family values back at home or else in the future yourself or your grandskids will be on this internet being judge by the haters.
Another PR Move
The City of Virginia Beach needs to rethink this latest blunder. Has Landstown coach Tommy Reamon invited Plaxico Burress to coach the wide receivers and Bruce Smith to coach the defensive linemen?
Slick Vick
Vick is useless and deserves exactly what those dogs got. It's funny, the "I didn't do it", and then "Yes, I did, and I'm sorry". Wow, will we have to forgive him for the next crime he commits? He will, watch and see. Good citizens know other crimes occured during the dog fighting events that were never charged to him...maybe gambling, sex crimes, oh come on there were no drugs involved...I may have been born at night, but last night. I wouldn't let that idiot clean my bathroom floors. He belongs in a cage baking in this hot sun...just like those dogs were. He'll never recover from what he did. He has demenstrated his IQ level, and it's a good thing NFL is looking to take him back because he cant do anything else....duh?
Stop being so SELF RIGHTEOUS
Give it a break now! There is not one person who's posted their message innocent of ever doing something wrong, wether you got caught or not. This human being Mr. Vick has done his time and made his bed. Who are you to judge him, yes his part in funding a dog fighting ring was wrong, and sorry for the animals. There are many more animals human animals who torture other human beings and don't get this type of publicity or sentencing because it's their 1st offense. This is all political scheme. Let's look in your secret closets and see what falls out. Those of you who have perfect angels for children who never makes mistakes and treats everyone with respect and is a help to their entire community, uplifts everyone that they come in contact with however possible. Let's just hope that the lives of your little darlings doesn't take a turn for the worst or they make a mistake and happen to disappoint you. Will they be the monsters that you're making Mr. Vick out to be "NO" you would do everything in your power to support and protect them (hopefully). He (Vick) is someone's child and he made a mistake if you don't care for him then fine you're entitled to your feelings but to bas
felonious world
For all of you who don't know, we live a world full of felons. You may not want Michael Vick to talk to your kids about football, but your child just might be talking to a convicted felon every day he or she goes to school. People convicted of felonies are every where. You may work with some. We are so quick to get on our high horses, when we need to step down and look around us some times. I just wish that the people who hate VICK and love dogs so much. Would go after BABY KILLERS and CHILD MOLESTERS with the same energy. A baby gets killed and the killer gets 3 years and is released with no fan fare. But, VICK kills dogs and gets far worst. I HOPE VICK GETS A CONTRACT IN THE NFL!!! He deserves it, he did no worse than those who drink and drive and kill everyday. 30 days for Vehicular Manslaughter!! It's all a joke, if you ask me and you are all wasting your energy.
Perhaps in YOUR world..
Perhaps there are a lot of felons in the circles you travel within, but I think parents have a reasonable expectation that a school would prevent a convicted felon to lecture kids about anything. I mean hey, it stands to reason that if you can't volunteer/work in a public school if you have a felony on your record, then it should also be true that you cant' bring a guest in to speak/teach or "mentor" about anything who also has a felony.
The other NFL player-turned-felon to which you refer is Donte' Stallworth who received only 30 days for vehicular manslaughter which is basically killing someone without the intent to do so-therein lies the difference, INTENT. Stallworth, unlike Vick immediatly admitted his responsibility and didn't attempt to place the blame on family members for his actions, nor did he lie to everyone about everything until there were simply no more lies left to tell that anyone would believe.
I would think that many wouldn't be making this comparison-after all, how can anyone claim that Vick's punishment was somehow based on racism but Stallworth who is also black got a light sentence. Maybe it's how Stallworth deported himself, unlike V
NOT ME mentality
You are sadly mistaken if you actually believe that there's no felons in your circle....let me first say that felons ARE everywhere!!! I have children and I have been on ALOT of field trips with my kids AND YOUR kids (if you have any). Does my being a felon mean I can't chaperone a field trip or wipe your child's snotty nose? NO!!!! When I go to help out in my kids' class, I sign the visitor's log NOT the convicted felon log!! It's none of your business or the school's business if I'm a convicted felon or not. Now, child molesters don't deserve to be near a school!!! I just can't believe the comments that some of you have posted!!! GO MICHAEL VICK!!!! I support you 100%!!!!
From 1 convicted felon to another!!! Keep your head up and do you!!!!
