A cat that survived being stabbed three times during a burglary in Virginia Beach last week appeared on the CBS "Early Show" this morning.
Hershey meowed and squirmed during his segment as he appeared with his owners, who talked with show host Harry Smith.
“Happily, Hershey only used up one of his nine lives,” Smith quipped as the segment began.
He asked the family to explain how the 10-year-old Persian was found with a butcher knife through its midsection last Monday.
Joe Ciccone, Hershey’s owner, explained that the family believes four men ransacked their home, taking valuables and harming the cat.
“They tore it up,” Ciccone said. “They stabbed him three times and they shoved a butcher knife all the way through him.”
The family believes the burglars picked up one of the knives that Ciccone uses to make fudge.
The cat made a speedy recovery that surprised the veterinarian who cared for him. Hershey still had two drainage tubes attached to his body during this morning’s TV interview in New York, the family told Smith.
The cat’s personality was beginning to get back to normal, Ciccone said.
Smith craned his neck to get a closer look at the restless feline.
“That is a really cute face,” Smith said.
Veterinarian bills running into thousands of dollars have hurt the family financially, Ciccone told The Virginian-Pilot last week.
Police continue to investigate the crime and were asking anyone with information to call Virginia Beach Crime Solvers at 1-888-LOCK-U-UP (562-5887).
Additional rewards that total $3,000 are being offered by The Humane Society of the United States and the Virginia Beach society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals.
Abbey Animal Hospital is collecting donations for the cat’s veterinary bills. Call (757) 471-1003 for information.
An account also has been set up in Hershey’s name with the Virginia Beach Schools Federal Credit Union.

I'm so glad Hershey is doing so well!
What a beautiful, precious little animal.
Let me just say that I am an animal lover. I have 2 cats and a dog and my babies are very much a part of my family. That said, I would NOT have made an 8 hour trip with a cat who is still has drains. A more appropriate interview would have been done remotely. I watched the segment and the cat was not happy. I don't think I would have been either-I think I would have been in pain.
Why it's newsworthy...
To Always a Lady --not sure HOW you got that screenname but anyway, it's not a *freakin' cat* it's an innocent life and in case you haven't read, many people who hurt animals, do it to humans too! So I hope they catch this sick person soon. I for one find it a heartwarming story that the cat survived such horror so if you don't like it--don't read it.
PAYDAY??
Hopefully the cat will get paid for that appearance on the Early Show, he can pay is own vet bill! Sorry to hear the baby got stabbed though, this guy is a sick cookie or he is just mad because he did not find anything good and took it out on the cat, who did not deserve it. Glad he is doing good though.

God Bless your hearts!
What an awful thing to have happen...first having your house vandalized ...then hurting your prescious pet. I had my home vandalized many years ago (my very first house), I had to sell that house, I couldn't get over the fact I was violated. My house felt dirty to me after that, I never felt safe there. Please do not ever be afraid to call 911, I'd rather be embarrassed because the owner is breaking in, then sorry that it was a robber!
Why
Why is this news worthy? It was a freakin cat. We as a community have bigger issues to deal with.
There are always bigger
There are always bigger issues to deal with, so what is your point? Ignoring those issues which make humans civilized would make dealing with those larger issues meaningless.
You're all heart
Here's a suggestion: change your moniker as you obviously ain't no lady.
one more time
dog bites man is not news
Man bites dog is news.
This is a human interest story
Now, I have a question for you. Did you really want an answer or did you just want to vent?
