Candidates' staffers battle on Twitter while McDonnell, Deeds debate

As the race for Virginia governor grows more intense, the candidates’ staffs battled each other on Twitter while Bob McDonnell and Creigh Deeds debated Thursday morning in Northern Virginia.

The two campaigns have both used Twitter and other social networking Web sites for some time to send campaign updates, photos and spread their messages. To find their pages, go to www.twitter.com/CreighDeeds and www.twitter.com/bobmcdonnell

As the candidates debated at the Fairfax County Chamber of Commerce, McDonnell’s staff posted Tweets like this on his Twitter page, directed at Deeds:

@CreighDeeds the astronomer...talks about "space"

@CreighDeeds getting angry ~staff #vagov

@CreighDeeds angry at Bob's Fairfax roots and Virginia Beach home ~staff #vagov #2009

Deeds campaign manager Joe Abbey posted these on his own Twitter page:

@bobmcdonnell - attacks @creighdeeds for his realistic approach to solve our trans. problems. wants his liquor store on every corner plan

@creighdeeds - i'm not sure where @bobmcdonnell is from. Nova/VA Beach/Henrico?

I know Mark Warner, I've worked for Mark Warner - @bobmcdonnell you are no Mark Warner

-Patrick Wilson

aren't staffers supposed to help

Maybe these are twelve-year-olds. Childish, immature, and distracts from substantive, relevant debate.

Tell you what - I'll vote for the candidate/campaign that takes the high road. Any takers?
