VIRGINIA BEACH
A former Navy SEAL today joined a field of Republicans hoping for a chance to take on U.S. Rep. Glenn Nye in the 2010 election.
Scott Taylor, who made an unsuccessful bid for Virginia Beach mayor in 2008, announced he will seek the GOP nomination for the state’s 2nd Congressional District.
“Here in the 2nd District, we face some tough challenges – with our economy, creating and protecting jobs, health care, education, transportation and our growing energy needs,” Taylor said in a press release. “I’m running for Congress because we need new leadership in Washington to address these issues.”
Taylor was one of four candidates for mayor in the November election. He lost to banker Will Sessoms, who also defeated long-time incumbent Meyera Oberndorf.
Nye, D-Norfolk, who was elected to a two-year term in Congress in 2008, has been targeted for defeat by Republicans, both in Virginia and nationally.
Others who have said they are seeking the GOP nomination include Ben Loyola, owner of an engineering firm; Scott Rigell, founder and owner of Freedom Automotive; and businessman Chuck Smith.

WHAT COMMENTS!
Some of these comments are over the top!
This former SEAL deserves a fair shake running for this office.
That’s what makes the American political system work.
To call him a wolf in sheep’s clothes is an insult.
Tell that to has face Mr. "I can say anything in this Blog"
Coward.
Great news!
This man is driven to see the needs of the community met, and he cares enough to actually listen. After working for him during his mayoral race and seeing the person that he is, I can say that his motives have proven to be the advancement of those around him, whether friend, neighborhood, city, or region. You don't get empty rhetoric with Taylor, you get honest answers and well-thought ideas based on the questions and concerns of the people he has spoken with.
Vote the socialist democrats
Vote the socialist democrats out. Nye is doing absolutely nothing for us.
Glenn Nye is a one-term guy...
The little fella has signed off on every one the spending bills (TARP & Stimulus). He brought absolutely zero dollars into the area for infrastructure projects and he's been doing the health care dance since the deal started. The boy has absolutely no backbone.
He won on the failures of his predecessor.
What we the people need to watch out for is the pile of drooling loonies that will be lining up to take his job. Loyola would pull out his mother's shiny teeth before kicking dirt on her grave. I'm sure the rest of them have their own personal aspirations too.
I for one would like to see a non-partisan 'servant of the people' take a shot at it. The time is ripe for someone outside of the two party system to take the house in our name.
Dare to dream I say!
Taylor is a wolf in sheep's
Taylor is a wolf in sheep's clothing! Careful what you wish for with this one. He's a pawn for the radical conservative crazies!!
Re: radical conservative crazies
Well at least we can use him to fight the Radical Liberal Crazies like Obama et al!! Remove your being and look at it from a third person perspective; it's insanity all over the place.
If you knew Scott-you wouldn't say that bs
Wow, nasty comments are already starting. OBVIOUSLY, you don't even know Scott if you are saying he is a wolf in sheeps clothing. ANYONE that knows Scott knows that is a bunch of bull. Scott is the most honest, loyal, hard working guy you will ever meet. Please do your researh on these campaigns before slandering people. The mayor race was only VA Beach, and let's elaborate on that percentage you gave. Taylor received just under $20,000 votes after coming into the race later then everyone else, w/hardly any money, and w/an unexperienced team backing him. In addition facing an opponent w/$600K and a 20 year incumbent. He earned every single one of those votes by his hard work, time, and effort he put into getting out and talking to people. He has my vote!! He is just what we need, honest, transparent, and excited!!
Mean
That's a mean unsupported comment.
Might as well have a real
Might as well have a real Republican.
Scott Taylor? A repeat of his last run for office?
I'm a bit curious why someone who got less than than 9% of the vote when he was running for Mayor is now running for Congress. What is his motivation?
I'm sure Scott Taylor the individual is a nice young man, and I applaud his military service. But Scott Taylor the candidate couldn't win a single precinct in the entire city in his last ill-fated run for public office. In fact, he finished dead last (fourth place) in all 94 precincts!
If the 91% of voters rejected him last time, I'm not sure why he's running this time.
